I recently heard a HAA pilot call 'Hospital 911XX' on the approach frequency. Is 'Hospital' a replacement for 'Helicopter' or maybe it is something else from a letter of agreement in that locality? First time hearing that so curious. |

Our agreement with local ATC is we use medevac enroute to pick up patient and patient loaded and "Hospital" all other times when VFR. |

an operator can get what is called a letter of agreement with an ATC agency that allows them to use a call sign rather than just an N number when and the airspace of that specific ATC agency. |

I remember seeing an FAA doc that stated to use"MEDEVAC" when with patient and your N number when no patient (although most ATC's are OK with your medical call sign with title and number(LifeGuard11, AirSTAT5, MedLife, AirEvac75,LifeSaver, Childrens, etc)) |

Controlled Airspace:- Enroute to accident or hospital: Hospital 911XX Patient on board: Medevac 911XX
Uncontrolled Airspace:- You decide. But Usually...... Patient on board: Medevac 911XX Otherwise: Helicopter N911XX

Used to be Lifeguard until 2012. Then went ICAO and it is now only Medevac. The pilot in question is getting the idea to use hospital from foreflight ICAO flight plans. If you read the Advisory Circular, there is only one approved callsign prefix for HAA, Medevac. Do not use Life guard, do not use Hospital or any other. Do not file IFR with the prefix L either. That all went away in 2012. Lastly, you do not need a LOA or MOU to use Medevac prefixes. It's recognized nationall. Read the Advisory Circular. I don't have time to look it up now. It changed the same time ADS-B came out. |
