Been doing this job quite a few years. VIP, Offshore, HAA, etc. There seems to be a stigma in the Corp world that they only hire those 2nd tier folks that either did their time doing turns around Lady Liberty or suffered a few seasons in the world of share ownership. The pay is pretty damn good, recently saw an advertisement 170k to 255k. The money has never been better and it seems even they are having issues retaining pilots.
Question. Even though you find the vacancy advertised publicly, is there any point in applying unless you are in this inner circle? Is it some sort of secret society or are they really looking for the best pilot out there?
Fire away.

it probably means they don't have anybody to pick from from the local club or they want someone more qualified that the 2000 hour, single engine tour pilot. Send a resume if qualified |

don't use a word like stigma unless you can use it properly. They like to hire pilots with nyc experience and tour guys are probably right there with experience to get the SIC job. |

Never say never, they do occasionally hire someone from outside the inner circle but not often. Put in your resume and hope for the best, there are now some corp jobs that are over 300k... |

look for competent pilots who fit their culture. Having an inside reference or personal contact in the pilot cadre is worthwhile. Hired a guy straight out of the USCG. You're correct about the salaries. |

The USCG guy had NY experience, having been based at the CG station there. And, he had me on the inside though I'd never met him. Had a very solid reference and profile. |

have a go, and stay in touch for future openings. When I retired from corporate work in early 2000s my inflation adjusted in today's dollars was 330k. Not kidding. |

What I've seen is that they like to hire their buddies that will follow their lead and not rock the boat. They sell the myth that NYC is the toughest airspace in the world and their the top 2% of the RW world. Funny you never hear FW guys make such a statement. It's controlled airspace in which you fly from a known to a known. Usually dual pilot with advanced machines and autopilot. My expereience is that they hire to their level or less. Disguises their incompetance. IMO, the corporate world could use more "outsiders" and dual rated pilots.
Corp pilots really seem to have disdain for anything over 8 hours duty day. Listen and you'll here them tell each other how great they are and how hard their job is. Put them in the gulf for a few weeks or in the middle of nowhere slinging trash or water. Bet they wouldn't last 2 weeks. |
