Old guys who were never pilots until age 55 suddenly and magically have 2500hrs and land these ems jobs all over the country. What a joke |

Well, 250 hours times maturity to work in that environment is equal to 2500. Easy |

It's the ones in their early 20s that have 3,000 that raises more eyebrows. |

if you start flight training when you're 18. You'll have 200+ hours and your CFI/II within two years. You'll fly 800-1000 hours a year instructing at a busy flight school. You'll then fly 800+ hours a year flying tours/ENG/entry level utility/whatever in your first turbine job post flight school. |

Empty hours? For a straight and level EMS gig? What should they have been doing? Are you going to hire them to fly fires at 500 hours? Or Ag? Please explain. |

those up and down jobs are so much harder than the "straight and level jobs". and yes, most ag pilots start out with a lot less than 500 hours |

I've been in and out of aviation 3 times since 1968.
12 years nonflying after Vietnam, 1971-1983.
And another 6 1997-2003.
Quit for good (so far) retired in 2017. |

You make a good point.
A military pilot who barely passes his commander ride and flies basic missions, is the same as a civilian pilot who flight instructs for one year, then flies tours for 3 years to get to 3000hrs.
Yes, they can be empty hours that doesn't promote much learning. Unless the pilot has some self discipline.
No matter the persons background you can have a pilot with a ton of hours that is worthless and a low time pilot that flies great and makes great decisions.
It depends on the persons and the mind set. |

Even if your an average pilot in your trained area of operation. you can still prabably get most jobs done and manage an engine failure or two, as well as a Top Gun and at least survive the crash. It's like car wrecks a lot of dumb asses seem to survive the worst crashes..
Not hours or skill , but just life and learning along the way and hopefully learning from life's general lessons which often come from outside aviation , will help you make better decisions... Bad decisions seem to kill most pilots. |

When flying a helicopter, any helicopter, there is no such thing as "empty" hours. you should not be so complacent as not to learn something from the flight ! |

your own question (actually, confirmed my point) when you said 'you shouldn't be so complacent as to not learn something from the flight'.
Pro tip: There are a LOT of empty hours accumulated because of complacency. Those people are sharing the airspace and flying over you. |

be so lucky in ur latter years. HAA is not a bad undertaking, just one to be on the toes when starting. Best to be an adult when starting this type of diverse work within which are very many awkward, and juvenile, variables. |
