Moving to a new hangar setup next year and looking for any good ideas to try and think ahead about.  We have no control over the hangar itself as its a standard hangar that will have airplanes in addition to our helicopter but the crew quarters we have a little bit of say on.  It will have the 3 bedrooms, common TV area, kitchen, laudry, showers, office and conference space.  Even neat ideas for furnishing it, helmet storage, lockers etc.  Always interested in pictures of others bases.  Already making sure to have outlets in the floor for powered recliners and HDMI cables from conference table to TV for presentations.

One thing we did when we built our base was made sure to have a pored concrete pad and piped in natural gas for a BBQ grill and smoker.

Be sure to label the pilot room office from the start. All to often the med crew take the room with the view of the helicopter or best weather view. I would try and pick a pilot bedroom on the opposite side of the building to the medcrew bedrooms for when Julie the Nurse drops in for some wx downtime action, and the medic doesnt get disturbed with the moaning and screaming.

Every base I have been at is an example of what not to have in a hangar.   Don't worry about the pool table.

Is the door big enough for the helicopter?  Will it open when it is windy (bi fold limits are 26 kts)?  Is it automatic or will you have to push it open yourself?  Is it heated?  Does it double as a bird sanctuary?  If you share a hangar, are they responsible or will they break the door, block the door, whine incessantly that you act like a commercial operation etc.?  Are you blowing dust on their C150 that hasn't flown in 3 years? Do you have your own fuel tank next to the helipad or will you have to fuel on other side of the field, you know, where they park the ultralights?  Have your office on the botton floor so you can go fly in a timely manner and have a bathroom on same floor.  Dont build a windowless mechanic office with zero vents for heating and A/C.  Don't build a windowless pilot office next to it with a vent openings installed, but not attached to anything.  Don't put the kitchen in the crew sleeping quarters.  If office is trailer, put the insulation between the pipes and outside wall so they dont freeze in 31.8 degree F weather.  Feed the feral cat.  If the wimpy medic is allergic to cats, keep the cat, get rid of the medic.  Do you have snow removal or is it you?  If you have to tow it thru the snow, don't get the smallest possible wheels for your lowest profile dolly.  That is but a few ideas.

Thank you for the advice, thankfully most of those issues wont be a factor as its a brand new 30,000 sq ft hangar that we will have half of and the 2 jets will both be ours.  Nice brand new building so modern factors in the HVAC and door dept.  Fuel truck will take care of fuel with an after hours bowser.  General layout appears good so far for what we have control over.

In a perfect world I like hangar design where the office runs down the side of hangar vs the back so the most forward office space is looking over the ramp and allows quick access to the aircraft and as you get further away from the ramp you put the more non essential office space like kitchen, bath, storage etc while the pilot and crew quarters are towards the ramp.  Its only single story office space.  

Sounds like you have come across some fun setups in your time, I've seen some real nightmares, some of those are older hangars that get repurposed into an HAA base for a new base and they only do just enough to make it work.  I've also seen brand new hangars that the helicopter doesnt fit unless the blades are X, wouldnt fit if at full width and sure enough they have dinged more than 1 blade over the years.  

Forget the helicopter, get some jet time. By the way, is jet crew rooming with the helicopter crew?

They will be in same building but other end of the hall and they are on call only right now for organs so no one would be there full time.  

Do you have a dolly of a helicopter transporter. the latter does not work well with crossing tracks for the hangar door?

Heliporter, we have the same door system now with tracks that the new building will have and it goes over no problem.  But I've also seen it where the elevations were screwed up and the space between the tracks is deeper and there is a significant slope leading from ramp to door tracks over just a 2-3 foot length and you can belly out the heliporter.

Answer the questions of what is the first, to last, thing one does to prepare to go out the door to fly and set the facility up to accomplish that from left to right etc. throughout the all sets and subsets of concern.  

Talk about magic that caters to even the most tired or distracted pilot!

and it all worked.  According to the companies employees recommended updates as they recognized the values and were able to implement them easily within the simple structure of what are usually very disjunct and messing flight operations setups.  You should see what cross reference coding can accomplish in the setup of Ops, MAINT, and safety manuals.  Not as hard as it might seem.
