I loved flying right up until I retired.... and I guess I love it and miss it now, too.

It took the better part of 40+ years to get there and by then I had seen enough of my friends make fatal errors to know that I could, too. Scared myself on occasion, as well. I decided to quit while that was true.

Flying helicopters is different than flying airplanes, it isn't going into airports and other preconfigured landings. You find the destination, try to find an adequately sized, level place to put your skids that is accessible for pax and cargo loading/off-loading. There may be no weather observation within a hundred miles, much less a terminal forecast: what you see is what you got; and what you infer from that is, hopefully, accurate and sufficient.

I do believe that when it's time to move on , you just know based on your own personal situation , not just hours of flight time or years of service but more just a feeling of purpose and life situation. This would apply to any job or profession .
It's  so personal that no one can tell you when it's time , you just know when it is.

what ever you decide it will be the correct decision at that moment in time , wish you all the best for what ever you decide .

At 10k you are no longer a junior pilot.  At 20k you become a senior pilot.  At 30k you stop all log book entries excepting to prove currency and all other requirements (imagination required).

If bored at 10k you need a change, go fly something different.  Sailplanes do it for some - the atmosphere becomes something very interesting and challenging.  Not bad for engine off handling in all powered flying machines either - very true dat.

I stopped logging time years ago as well.  I could download my duty logs and figure it out, but it wold probably take a week, and it just doesn't matter at this point.

make sure you're capable of proving currency in a timely manner - company records should do it but if on your own probably best to just scratch in the flights that prove requirements.  Not a biggee, unless the wrong lawyer gets hold of it after an incident or accident, then it becomes annoying at least.

I'm olderen u!!

sure you log in a 'reliable record' those flights which prove your currency, otherwise, lol and good wishes to all.

that is true.  Trust you'll give it a go and get hooked - by-by check book.  Sailplanes are a terrific hoot, especially cross country, off field landings, and the cost to retrieve the thing!!

I thought I'd go to 10,000 hours and quit. But I kept at it for another 1k or so, too dumb to stop I guess. From as early as I can remember, all I ever wanted to be was a helicopter pilot. And so I was. When you're good at something it's hard to walk away. But 35 years was enough, eventually we all get to that point when we realize it. Loved it right to the end, actually thought I'd miss it more but I don't. Damn things tried to kill me too many times, it made the eventual decision to stop easy. Wouldn't change a thing, but wouldn't do it over either. Piano player in a *****house (like I told my mom I was) would have probably been fun too.

more than 35 under same circumstance and left for the same reasons and never looked back.  There's a price paid in maintaing the necessary mindset to be in the game that long of which I question its impact on other life areas, especially family.  Is what it was.

After 11K for me ....I went to Microsoft flight sim 2020 to do things that I always wanted to try. Safe unless you fall out of your chair. Microsoft flight sim 2024 is coming with lots of fun helicopter scenerios.

Walked away at 14,000+ hours. That was over 4 years ago. Initially missed it but I've moved on. I look at this forum about once a year and the topics never change! See ya around. Fly safe.
