To all the utility pilots out there: Have your companies kept up with the pay increases that we've been seeing in the EMS industry?

Utility always paid more than HEMS, but quality of life sucks bigtime.

it's not full time most operators.  Yeah and you don't get full time benefits either with 401k retirement. Fire season done.... laid off for the season.  Utility makes short term quick money manybe

No sign on bonus, no retention bonuses. But most of us have 21/21 schedule and make over $150K for medium experience. some above $200K with lots over experience and more time on the road.

But we keep our hotel points.

Utility has always paid better than ems if you have long line skills. $150k+ a year. 12/12 or 14/14 work around 140 days a years plus travel days.

but how do you get long line skills

because nobody gets hired except longline pilots

i guess longline pilots are just like learjet pilots

you don't become one, god just makes them and the employers have to bid for them

god i hate this industry, it's one half rich users and one half poor deluded bums

Hmm... perhaps we are just born to it?  JK, I drove fuel truck, did ferry flights, helped the truck mechanics and kept a good attitude all for a few minutes with a line when the owner was in a mood to throw me a bone.

Eventually he was in a jam for a fire pilot and got me practiced  enough to pass a forest service check ride. well, a summer of mostly missed bucket drops and I got better.

Waste years sweeping hangars and shaking richards and if you're lucky bossman just might let you pay him for a bucket drop or two. Hopefully you somehow managed to get carding minimums between washing fuel trucks.

Define utility? I just started flying Power and gas patrol and I'm making more than double what I was in EMS. Golden benefits and I don't work very hard.

Keep it up. Patrolling learns you the basics of the grid. Then you can start working on the system. Helps if you can long line and the the HAA money will at least triple.

Yeah, best to just jump in there knowing nothing about induction, multiple circuits on a single tower, correct way of grounding, electrical potential zones or the physical hazards of unseen wire. Knowing how the grid is constructed helps you know where to look.

Perhaps your right Though it can't be that hard right?

you don't need to know any of that. possible you needed to be told it's bad to fly into a wire.

Oh yeah, I forgot about corporate.  How is it there?  Are they having to raise their payscale to keep pilots?
