Nothing new under the sun. Drones been flying since before WW2. Still no passenger drones.
https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20231009-the-robot-aircraft-with-a-nightmarish-nuclear-mission
But, no crews could save airlines 35 billion/year:

Eventually, enough human mistakes or a huge financial shift could force the airlines to go to one pilot, then no pilot. |

If you saw two guys named Hambone and Flippy, which one would you think liked
dolphins the most? I'd say Flippy, wouldn't you? You'd be wrong, though. It's
Hambone. |

Airliners have gone from four engines and five crew in the 1930s to two engines and two crew today. When airlines get to one engine and no pilot, im done. |

Worked in star wars. We're not that far off.
DARPA
Airbus is already working to certify automation in the cockpit to allow single pilot ops.
A350
Like one of the replies to this thread: People would have screamed "impossible!" about twin engine oceanic flights... no way it would ever be possible and yet only a minority of planes flying transatlantic/Pacific flights are 4 engine aircraft (very few 3 engine birds in service anymore). That's within a span of less than 20 years too.
Automation is certainly improving. Only a matter of time now. |

there will never be less than two pilots on a passenger airliner. that's as far as you can go with redundancy. nobody ever has been either amazed or surprised by two engine aircraft over water |

There was much controversy within the FAA and the airlines when Douglas and Lockheed desigend the thee engine DC10 and 1011 for over water. Same when the airlines started with twin engine jets. Single human pilot with advanced electroni pilot coming soon. |

Overwater, point of no return is determined by pressurization or loss thereof. then fuel becomes the limiting factor, not number of engines |

Three engines were hotly debated as they were being designed. You can look it up! |
