Msg ID: 2794546 Pay/Work Schedule/Expectations as a Base Mechanic at AMC? +1/-1

I see a couple roving openings at AMC that I'm interested in and wanted to hear from Mechanics who are employed or were employed by AMC? Is the maintenance culture and expectations there reasonable? Is the Pay worth the work required or expectations? Pay range for well seasoned mechanics? What various schedules do they offer for roving technicans. At my current employer it seems there are about 15 different schedules for base mechanics and rovers with very little standardization between contracts? Management? Seems alot of places struggle in the middle management area and this can make life miserable. How good are the benefits? Cost of medical, vacation, sick or PTO schedule? 401k? Thanks for any inputs that are actual valid points. Yes I know I can call their HR but I'd like to not go in blind if I'm gonna open that discussion.

The job isn't bad, but it isn't easy either.

As a rover, you will get a rental car (van/truck) for an entire month or longer.   Gas and expenses are on the company credit card, which get paid as you submit expense reports (no money out of your pocket).   Hours vary daily.   Some are long, others are nothing.   Your on an on-call work schedule for a "hitch" of about 7 or 14 days, with a 7 day OFF afterwards.   You track your time by a time card, anything under the "salary" is paid, anything over the "salary" is paid as overtime.   Being a  helicopter operation, you can be called to some remote locations to fix stuff, but that's what helicotpers are known for (it's not often that happens, btw).  Pay and Benefits are good overall, family medical/dental, 401k, vacation, sick time, STD/LTD insturance, and some other off-the-wall benefits.   If you travel by air/hotel, you get to keep the loyalty points for yourself.  AMC is a closly watched air carrier, so FAA keeps things standard across the board.

AMC is a big operation, so there is lots of opportunity to move about internally.

Like with any job (or career), it's what you make of it!

That sounds like a good gig as a CASS auditor, how did you find it?

To add what a previous post said, a lot of the job depends on the base(s) and the program.  Will you be filling in for a mech that's out on vacation or some other reason or because the base you are sent to doesn't have a full time mechanic.

Some programs might require you to drive to a number of different bases in a day for one reason or another, what do they need?

If the bases you are going to are a real mess, meaning you fix the aircraft then ramco then consummables then the inventory then order what's missing then get blamed for things that aren't right, not much fun.

Visit the base(s) if possible, talk to the staff if possible and listen to your gut instinct.  It can be a decent place to work depending on your work ethic and what you are looking for.

It is not a bad gig. Every regionAl manager is different but if you take care of the a/c nobody will mess with you. It's not like the GOM though. Clean up your grease prints and keep it looking nice. Every hospital program is different but just be cordial and don't argue with med crew or pilots. Work as a team instead of the us against them mentality.
If you worked in the GOM then you know how to work quickly and efficiently. That already gives you an advantage. I personally get paid more than at the big 2 operators in the gulf. Benefits are comparable. The he culture is vastly different-but better. Ramco sucks. The hardest part of the job is learning the processes. Every operator does things a bit differently.
If you're responsible, self motivated and ethical it's a fantastic place to work. If you were a plug in the GOM it isn't the place for you.

Thanks for the input! Previously worked in the GOM and I have been in the HAA environment for 17 years with a different operator. I have managed to stay at the same program and the same base the entire time so I get the job functions and getting along with the pilots and using kid gloves with the med crew/customer. Like you I also make more than any of the GOM operators pay, The thing that has my attenion is the 14 & 14 schedule. I'd probably be willing to take a pay cut for more time off. We have a ton of varying schedules across the company I.E. 8 & 4, 10 & 5 and 20 & 10 with 24 hr call on all days on. These schedules suck and none are equal time off. With these schedules the majority of your days off wind up during the week and only a fraction of the time do your days of encompass the entire weekend. I've reached that point in life that time off is more important.

Thank you for the input. The job posting doesn't give particulars if the it's base coverage or heavy maintenance events. I kinda figured like most EMS operations it is all dependent of the needs that are facing them at that moment.
