How hard can it be? You just raise the collective and fly over the ground, which is pointy Instead of flat.

Insurance companies is why. Years ago FAA types were big on blaming pilot error associated with density altitude crashes even if DA wasn't the complete cause and suddenly every insurance company wanted documentation that pilots were trained in high DA flying.

I took a piston to the mountains early in my career and had to slow to 60 kts at max power just to get over the ridge. If I tried to go any faster RPM was going to suffer. The learning curve was steep.

There are situations in the mountains where you will not be able to out climb the down drafts, experienced pilot will know they signs and fly appropriately.

I've seen bell helicopters get mast bumping from updrafts with low g and incorrect controls inputs. Luckily everyone got home.

Thats only scratching the surface.

Flying in the mountains can be challenging at high DA and limited power. It's not for rookies.

I have witnessed backslope airmass decent rates of +3000 fpm ... you're not gonna climb out of that in anything.

also I've been in a situation where the upslope wind was such that, even at flat pitch and zero airspeed we were still climbing...

flying in the mountains is different... and if you don't understand what's going on you can easily put yourself and crew in an unrecoverable situation.

It used to be the occasional troll, perhaps more than occasional, just a part of JH web site. Now it seems 90% of posts are trolls, it becomes boring.  What makes it more sad, there are too many in the industry today who actually think and say the same things the trolls do.

Don't waste your time.  If he is a troll he must at least read. If he's a newer generation pilot, he isn't going to heed any words of wisdom. To these people wisdom doesn't come from experience..wisdom comes from Google !

Hiring new pilots, mountain time (aka high DA) experience is worth much more than multi engine or ifr time.  poor multi engine experience rarely results in anything too terrible.  ifr time is black and white and easily learned.  mountain time on the other hand is not black and white and a lack of experience will easily put you in a balled up heli.  Our industry has it backwards when operators put twin engine and ifr time above mountain time!

I haven't flown below 6000 feet in 30 years, and I'm still scared.  Absolutley hate turbulance.  Downdrafts on the wrong side of the valley go from nothing to screaming down in a heart beat.  Woudn't know what to do if the aircraft came to a hover with only half collective.  I've only hit the pedal stops about 10 times, but always expecting it.

BUT, I love it.
