A helicopter crashed off the coast of Dubai during a night training flight, with two pilots on board missing, the United Arab Emirates' aviation authority said on Friday.

The Bell 212 helicopter went down in the Gulf at around 8:30 pm (1630 GMT) on Thursday after taking off from Dubai's Al Maktoum International Airport, the authority said, quoted by the official WAM news agency.

The pilots -- an Egyptian and a South African -- had been on a training flight for AeroGulf, the UAE's leading commercial helicopter operator.

"Search and rescue teams have recovered the wreckage and are still searching for the crew," the aviation authority said, adding investigations were underway.

AeroGulf was founded in 1976 to provide services to the oil and gas industry, before expanding its services to other sectors.

I spent 5 years there on a training contract to the UAE military.  Some of what you say is kinda true, but not totally true.  We "passed" too many who should have flunked out.  That said, there were some who I would have shared a cockpit with any time, any place, to include combat.  We used to discuss that among ourself a lot, and the bottom line is maybe 10% (at best) would have made it through USA, UK, EU, etc flight school.

So true, and it doesn't matter if it's fixed wing.

a position with Dubai Police in 1984.  Turned it down.  Too much history training pilots from small countries.  Would have paid really well plus benefits, perhaps a career worth but just couldn't get past what was gonna be required professionally.
