good commentary, however, I believe that helicopter had the old style cockpit, not the flat screen displays being shown on your explanation.  I also don't know if that particular helicopter had a fire bottle installed.  That model didn't always have them installed, and if they were installed would be only one.

However, I believe that particular aircraft was certificated under Part 27.  That being the case, it was not a transport category aircraft.  I've personally seen in the past many operators remove the engine fire extinguishing system because it was an option.  They didn't want to have the additional inspection and maintenance costs.

Whether or not that particular P-1 had the operational bottles, I personnly would have no way of knowing.  One thing can be visually determined from the video, the fire caused catestrophic failure of the tailboom attaching points.

Sad.

There are other videos of this that show it more clearly, but it looks like the fire was in the compartment below the exhaust stacks. You EC135 guys will have to educate me on what's in that space, but it does have ventalation (you can see the fire through the screen) and it also is where the tail boom attaches. If that is where the fire was I doubt the fire bottles would do anything.

The battery is mounted in that space and it could have been a NICAD with thermal runaway. The only other component that comes to mind could have been an AC compressor with the old flex drive that the company out of SHV had an STC for. What was the tail number /operator?

Yeah, was pretty sure that's where the AC was. It is possible that if it was in that area or was from the avionics deck then no engine fire light would have lit. I've heard you can typically smell the smoke even if it's that far back, but that seems like a stretch. I've had electrical burn smell before just behind the passenger area in a 206B and could smell it. Anyone else have experience? If he knew it was a fire, he certainly missed some huge fields he could have landed immediately in. Very unfortunate. Don't discount bad company culture that could have pressured him to RTB instead of risk hitting wires or something during Land ASAP/Immediately. That has pushed many aviators to choose a really dumb course of action... I know some folks get lit up about armchair quarterbacking but critical thinking and discussion is FAR better than just saying "RIP" or "That sucks". Especially for the few younger aviators that get on here. Tons of lessons learned from any accident/incident and we should always share our thoughts, experiences, FARs, RFM procedures, etc.

I was thinking an oil fire too, maybe a loose “b” nut from the previous night‘s work.
