The US is not a democratic society. It is a Constitutional Republic. Have you ever voted or looked at a ballot? Of course you can write in anyone you please. At least for now.

It isn't a direct democracy, but it is a democratic society!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Representative_democracy#:~:text=Representative%20democracy%20is%20a%20form,vote%20on%20policy%20initiatives%20directly.

Representative democracy is a form of democracy in which people vote for representatives who then vote on policy initiatives; as opposed to direct democracy, a form of democracy in which people vote on policy initiatives directly.

They carry your collective vote to the college (convention).

Your House Congressmen and Senators are elected by straight-up popular vote, as is your governors, and State legislatures.  City and County leaders.  Sheriffs.

If you have a problem with the electorial college, then you must have the same problem with the Senate, since each State has two regardless of population!  Or, with the UN Assembly, since each State (i.e, country) has one voting delegate regardless of it's population.

But, the OP's question is:

Does a democratic society allow you to write-in a candidate who is not on the ballot?

Even in a U.S. election for President, one can nominate oneself and has a blank line to write-in anyone (who will be vetted later).  Right?

If it was based on popular vote, then the campaigns would focus only on the big population states:  NY, CA, FL, TX, since that's were they'll get the bulk of popular vote!

And, that is why the system was set up NOT to elect a President by popular vote tally!

A candidate could win just 11 key states in the electoral college system and win the presidency... same issue as the national popular vote argument.

Try another argument as to why the electoral college is NECESSARY today...

So that presents some good points, but not enough to keep the electoral college I'd say.  Electoral College forces candidates to appeal to the key states with enough votes and ignore the rest still.
