I'll say this when no others will.

Todays new generation of Helicopter Pilots seem to think it's cool to bring todays technology into the Cockpit or Box Office if you perfer, cell phones pluged into your helmet, I-pads on your knee, and whatever else you're doing to stay connected while you're flying. It's all just distracting you from the serious job you should be doing, just like texting and driving is killing your friends everyday.

In my career of 40+years of utility, I tuned my ears and attention solely to the machine I was flying 100% of the time, listening for a bearing starting to sing, or some other noticible change, and would never allow the distractions to enter my brain as seems to be happening these days.

Just putting this out there as a seed for you new guys to consider, so you too can enjoy old age and retirement some day.

Fly safe.

To blame electronics and other new devices entering the cockpit as the problem, just as the kind blame guns as an issue. An iPad in the cockpit or a phone is just an object, and used incorrectly can possibly cause a distraction. but an iPad running ForeFlight is no more of a distraction than your panel mounted G430 or whatever and I would argue, mose of the garmin GPS are not even near as good as ForeFlight running in the cockpit.

so

he's talking about using those devices for things other than the for flying. we know it's "just an object". like a gun is just an object that happens to put small holes in people. the people on this forum are brain dead

don't you have a really cool picture of some antique helicopter sitting on a ramp somewhere in the 70's?

shouldn't you be explaining points of interest to your passengers, maybe do some fancy turns to give them a vacation thrill?

Wait a minute, you talk about the 70s like it was a long time ago. I don't think it was! I still remember it!

had a Captain listening to recorded classical music via earbuds.  Wasn't impressed so on base check had him listen to his music as we did the checks.  Didn't take long before he got the point.  Ended that problem.  There are also serious legal implications fiddlingwith non-essential bits, especially if an incident or accident comes about.

I've been at power line 25 years.  After awhile it's about as task oriented as a drive on the interstate. So  I listen to music, books on tape, take phone calls on Bluetooth talk on the radio or whatever. I'm as in tune with a 500's sound as most I'd say but I've noticed when a bearing sings it's also shedding metal and the chip light illuminates.

Naw.... I've never heard a bearing sing just the light from a bad bearing.

It is astonishing that curent pilots would defend their position on this.  Oh, wait, that is the point of the post.

I'd eat a bullet if I had to log 8 hrs a day and not listen to my music or listen to podcast.
Shut up about bearings singing, when we break stuff, we make sure it breaks good.

a bearing sings it usually emits a vibration, easy to detect in some parts o& the drive train.

However, your days are numbered.  Enjoy until then.
