called first officers. That's what the article calls them. And I guess they would be "senior" first officers as they are high in seniority, even though there is no such term. You go to the bottom on seniority when you upgrade so many stick with FO. It's been this way for decades.

I know a female FO who has been so for 30 years. Her choice. Once she got the schedule rotation she needed to be home with her kids she didnt see the need to sorta start over as she puts it. She is a single mom, a very skilled aviator, does training locally, is an FAA examiner, and is beautiful inside and out.

Point of the article is they are junior for sometime and have crappy schedules and work-life issues, then once they become senior, they don't upgrade to become junior again with crappy schedules and work-life issues

Yes, it's been that way for decades and still is.   Some folks on here think that the grass is greener on the "other" side, but this article shows it is just a different kind of weed.

I reread it, and it read the same as it did the first time.

"The promotion can be unappealing because it often results in life-distrubing commutes and unpredictable schedules."

"The airlines are addressing the issue with quality-of-life enhancements in contracts like scheduling changes to try to avoid the four- and five- grinds that some junior captains face and bonus pay to compensate for the misery".

The job's quality-of-life, commute, schedule, and misery index won't change!

And, the same issues exist for a junior FO also, until that pilot slowly climbs the list on the seniority list he sits on.

Someone said "I think they are called First Officers", implying they are not Flight Officers.   So, the question is, why are we calling them anything professionally below?   "Hi folks, this is your Captain from the Flight Deck, welcome aboard...."

Why are they being called or recognized as any of the below titles of "Flight Officer" is incorrect, particularly when "officer" is in their title?

Captain

First Officer

Second Officer

etc

Aviation is borne from the Laws of Admirality, where ship's "officers" are designated.   The Captain is considered the highest "officer" on the vessel, and those under him in command are both his senior officers and junior officers.   In the airlines, they have adopted those same titles even if the FARs don't recognize any of them.

So, using the terms above is incorrect if one thinks junior officer and senior officer is also incorrect for aviations terms.

As in JUNIOR vs SENOIR Captains, First Officers, Second Officers, etc.    They are "Officers" of the airplane they are assigne as flightcrew members.   As in, in-charge.

Amazing your definitions are not in the FARs, but neither are any of them that are being used in the industry!

If you don't like the term "Flight Officer" because you've deemed it stupid, then you shouldn't like the term Captain, First Officer, Second Officer either for the same reasons!

But, you lost the arguement on logic so you resort to name calling!   Classic childish response!   Bye!

as in FIRST FLIGHTCREW MEMBER OFFICERS

which makes the Captain an OFFICER too.

Which makes them FLIGHT OFFICERS, traditionally speaking, applying your stupidity rule.   So, any Captain, FO, SO, is stupid for calling him or herself, or you calling them, anything but PIC or SIC.

That is, if you don't want to sound stupid yourself!

Was a card carrying member of ALPA...   Speaking of which, when is OPEIU Local 109 going to send me a membership card??   They have been taking my money for years, and still haven't sent me a membership card!

Based in LGA, then CGV.   Commuted to work.  Lived in a crash pad as a junior flight officer.   Didn't upgrade because the schedule was awful.   Travelled a lot, and only saw the hotel room and nearby restaruants.   3-4-5 turns a day was common.   Missed a bunch of commutes home due to late arrivals and a few random drug tests (only done on the last day/leg of a trip, btw).   Jumpseating was no gurarentee either!

Flying around the flagpole coming home everyday is much nicer, even if its for "lower pay" helicopter jobs (I make more than ever, FWIW).

You might be right about your lunar landing, lunitic!

You do not "go to the bottom when you upgrade"

you get a seniority number when you are hired.  If a pilot decided to fly as a WB FO for 10 years then upgrade    to CA, he will be a 10 year CA and will be able to hold whatever his seniority can hold.  a pilot does not start over once he upgrades to CA.

many of us are senior WB FOs and enjoy the international flying and layovers.  We can make just as much or more than NB Captains with premium pay trips.  Why upgrade?

And, it you knew what you were talking about, youd have said that 10 year captain woujld be able to hold a "line", not "whatever his seniority can hold".

He waits so he can hold a line!

How do I know this??

a guy with Eastern who flew right seat in a number of machines including 1011 only to find the company give him the option of up to the left seat or out - he flew 727 left seat 1980 -1991 when the company folded.

I'd say eventually FOs will face a decision.
