Well yes they are a waste of resources. damn few places that helitack crews can't reach faster.

but.... smoke jumpers consider themselves  the seal team of fire fighters and the forest service tradition is to uphold that. McCall Idaho actually has a museum for these heroic creatures.

So many FS higher ups come from that job or at least the tradition that jumpers will always have that boys club.

They are not a waste in Alaska. Some fires are started by lightning and are 100 or more miles from the nearest helibase. Smoke jumpers can get to the fire, with resources, twice as fast as a helicopter. Not to mention they can jump on the fire and in some areas a helicopter may not find a landing spot clear of trees for a long distance. The distance preclude helicopters from having substaintial on station time or using water buckets.

Helicopters will eventially end up on most fires but are not alwys suitable for initial attack.

I've worked for the forest service for 15 years and have friends who are smoke jumpers. They are absolutely needed. You can drop alot of people and equipment off in one shot alot faster compared using a sky truck multiple times.

They are a lot more useful than the lazy helitack or even rappellers

Been flying fires for 25 years and agree they are a waste excpt perhaps Alaska.  Virtually nowhere in the lower 48 that a rappel team can't get to.  Also agree that many in USFS upper managment are X-jumpers so the program will continue.

Lost touch with a jumper pal named BILL JOSLIN.  Can anybody help me reconnect with him?

Still useful in Alaska. In the lower 48 they mean helicopter pilots will maintain long line currency.
