I sometimes go quite a bit over the max weight if I can drag the skids off the ground. Our old lead pilot a Vietnam guy taught us how to really make the most of our lift.
is the MGTW really a rule or more of a recommendation? |

Exceeding the max gross weight has cumulative effects! Maybe you get away with it but what about the next guy?

In for a penny, in for a pound. If you are going to operate your helicopter past the max operating temperature you might as well fudge on the GW too. Limits, we don’t need no stinking limits. |

and managers who think that if no inspection is required for exceedance, then it really isn't a limitation.
I try to distance myself from such people. Given the opportunity, I try to remove them from the industry. |

an RVN vet helicopter pilot who did what you speak about many times, but, this isn't war unless you choose to wage it by chance on yourself through stretching your professional liability playing test pilot, which you probably are not.
Play by the rules or find another job, other than spoofing on public forums. |

There are at least 2 gross weight limitations that apply to helicopters. Structural, and atmospheric. Structural is an absolute limit. It may be reduced by temperature, wind( anti torque tail rotor aircraft), altitude, humidity, atmospheric pressure etc. Sometimes referrred to as WAT. |
