We are all diff shapes and sizes. RFM is not about human factors it is about machine limitations. I suggest you ignore the RFM temp limit and set a personal temp limit. What's more each company should have an upper limit criteria. Ex 115 F or somewhere in that vicinity.
machine limits are not human limits. Do not pass out in flight. |

July, August, and September suck
June and October can be okay

True that! We were both night shift guys and he called me at about 2 AM to complain that he was being dispatched on a flight that he thought I should take because he thought we were closer. I tried to explain to him the dispatch folks had the technology to know who was, in fact, actually closer, and they would send the right aircraft. That went on for like 10 or 15 minutes. I finally said to him, "you realize if you had just taken the call, you'd be launched and almost there by now, right?" He hung up on me. I swear to God! The other time, he was doing workover at oour base. We were rural and about an hour away from the major metro area hospital. I relieved him for the night shift and asked if he'd had any flight. He repiled that he turned one down "due to weather." I asked what the weather issue was. He said, "it was raining when the call came in." I replied, "we haven't had any rain today." He said, "not here, at the receiving hospital." I asked him if the rain was "when the call came in, or forcast for the 1.5 hours later when he would be arriving?" HE said it didn't matter because he "didn'y fly in rain." I said, "well you know the aircraft can, right?" His reply was, "well I don't," and "goodbye." |

So if your EMS helicopter is air conditioned you can ignore any temp limits in you RFM. |

If it's in the RFM, that's the limit, if your personal limit does not reach that limit, and as stated by the individuals above, you need to get out of this industry and go find something in an air condition room.
We all know that individual that turns anything down if it's too close to his break time, it's too late in the evening or he just doesn't feel like it. My present base all the pilots want to work and have a good work ethic. The base I used to work at two of the four were worthless that base has been closed down. |

The aircraft will fly, with power applied, just fine for several degrees above the prited limit. It's power off, in autorotation, that the temp limit was established. P |

SOOOOOOOO does the world shut down due to 115 degrees? do construction workers, refuelers at a airport stop working, do ambulances and EMT's and Cops stop working? how about the AC guys that have to come out and fix your AC at your base because it is running at 65 degrees to keep your fat azzzzz cool....do you tell them "oh its 115 you don't have to come out"......think of everyone that has to be out in that all day due to WORK.....
personal limits...hahahaha....sure....I don't think i have ever in my career turned a flight down for heat....aircraft will still fly and I just drink A LOT of water when I can....Apparently you have NEVER been in the Military or a soft branch like AF or Army pilot sitting in quarters before.....yeah, we endured the heat laziazzz |

Macho man much? You're a pilot and I hope you don't let the decisions other people make- sound or otherwise,, oblige you to follow their example- you're not them.
Whats the rfm oat limitation for normal operation in your aircraft? If you have to look it up to answer this challenge, you were ignorant in your response, weren't you?

If the med crews find out that you're even remotely in dangering their lives by flying beyond the rotorcraft RFM temperature is recommended for that altitude or area guarantee they'll throw you under the bus. " oh the limitation for temp for that Airport is 112? And it's 115 out? Guarantee they'll throw you under the bus. |

Being long retired, I really don't have a dog in the race but it sounds like the old cranky guys are the ones that are working and are tired of picking up the slack for the those that won't. Some times you just have to do what has to be done.
The RFM is really nothing more than a Quasi book of guidelines. If you knew how aircraft limitations in the RFM are developed you would be shocked. Every time you get in a helicopter you are a test pilot. I don't have enough time or the typing skills to enlighten you. Do some research, With the advent of computers and newer technology I'm sure it has improved. ( I hope). Used too be two pilots. One that could fly and one that could read and write. The pilot flying didn't have to know how to read or write. Kind of like the airlines are today.
I would rather fly too hot than too cold. I don't know if ambient temps could ever get hot enough to affect components (other than avionics). Cold is a different. Metal does funny stuff a real low temps.
I think I have too much time on my hands !! |

Regarding metal doing weird stuff in the cold: I always thought it was amazing a frozen wrench can fall off the top of an aircraft and shatter, yet the very aircraft it fell off of is safe to fly in the same cold weather.

The good news is you can overload an an aircraft and usually get away with it, as long as you don’t crash it. If you got the power, go for it. |
