Where it becomes a real problem is when they get paid per diem when they shouldn't, like whne they bill M&IE to their room but collect the per diem also. Of course, it takes an auditor (someone who knows the trick and is looking for it) to uncover the fraud/corruption occuring under their noses. |

Per Diem rates $59/day are considered income, not reimbursements and need to be taxed. That's why the companies keep it at the standard rate or below, including airlines. Airlines paying per diem to pilots flying out-in schedules get taxed because it doesn't involved an overnight.
