So, is helicopter training worth 4x the cost of fixed wing training to land a job that ultimately pays .25 of what an airline pilot earns? Is the job satisfaction worth the unrealized earnings? |

I'd really feel somewhat embarrassed earning such an astronomical amount of money only working a 24 hour shift now and then. |

It's only the nurses that make an astronomical amount and they have to know more info than you do on a daily basis. Ever notice all the online training and tests they have to do? Way worse than your annual checkride or semi-annual instrument ride.
Medics mage good wages for a paramedic position but it's not astronomical. |

For me it is. My training cost about $65K back in the 90's. I've had a really rewarding career and could retire any day but enjoy it so much I just keep going. Salary has averaged about 120K over the last 10 years with a little OT. The airlines wouldn't work for me, especially been stuck in the cockpit with another pilot for hours at a time. I tried fixed wing briefly but I enjoy single pilot helicopter stuff more. Good luck with your future. |

Me too, but I have to ask, who do you work for to have an average of $120k in the last 10 years? I've been in HAA for 22 years and still don't make that, not even close. |

environment, if you're at a HAA company for more than ~12-15 years and aren't >base +100k, you really should look around just a little bit. There is no reason to not be over $100k unless you're constantly moving from company to company. |

I'm at the same place for 20 years ago. I started at 70K and have got 3% every year without fail. Now my base pay is $122,745. Usually take home close to $150K.

From a money in, money out perspective, no. It's not worth it at all.
Ya get one life. Go fill it with the experiences you want. If that includes any gig that pays you to fly any aircraft, go FW. If you wanna spend your time flying helicopters, go RW.
The way you spend your time is what matters. Cause when this world is done with you, there is no money out. |
