HAA is the worst job know to man. If you're at the Mayo and you got 5 pilots per base and work 3 times a week you may enjoy it. HAA offers no vacation and generally it's a terrbile job

Except when you realize that 90% of the time your crew gets diverted to ground ambulance, or fixed wing and you're left doing administrative stuff all the time.

How can it offer no vacation when you are off every other week?  PTO adds up too!

I do agree that it is very difficult to get pilots in some of the rural areas.

Regarding the military shortage: it's only going to be worse for the industry for next 20 years for the following reasons: The Army is largest provider of exiting miltards. The Army just changed a few years ago to 10 years ADSO (so 4 year delay of incoming pilots to the industry starting here in about 6-7 years from now). The Army is already short applicants (and hiring people who shouldn't be pilots or will scare themselves at their own incompetence and not want to continue a career as a pilot); not by a lot, but they are still shorter than previous years. The Army shortage is causing retention bonuses/benefits to go into effect (unprecedented ones at that) to keep the few that might want to stay longer. RTAG and others seem VERY appealing to the younger generation after dealing with Army stupidity and poor leadership so many will at least try to jump ship to the FW world. The Army already shifted to helicopters that mostly fly themselves and flight school training has VERY little stick/rudder training so most who transition out to a 407/A-Star/similar are going to scare themselves and others so bad they may not want to maintain a helicopter career. Lower retirement incentive to stay in the military long term is the only thing that may help pilots get out of the military earlier.

and rudder skills, lack thereof, make pilots dependent on pushing buttons to save the day when simple confidence in good raw pilot stick and rudder skill can and does save the day.

The Army's choice of basic training helicopter is totally absurd.  Get a squiggly little one with no SAS and learn how to fly a helicopter before messing with two engines and other distractions.

What you have is a bunch of companies...way too many companies...with way too many aircraft. The market is saturated. Needs to be cut by about 60%. These companies saw gold with all the dough that used to be available. Things have changed now. Also don't forget basic economics, the facts are that rich folks now have trillions of cash in profits that have been redistributed from the poor and working people over the past few decades and that money has to be invested. These companies are just places that all this money is trying to find a home and a place to be put to work. Anyway, if you don't believe that there are way way too many positions and not some kind of dire shortage of pilots, just ask yourself why if there are openings that the "services" keep on being provided and the bases aren't closed and the businesses don't go out of business. If the number of HAA was rational there would be about 1/3 of them in business and you would see 15 or 20 well-qualified and capable pilots trying to get one of those jobs. The fact that there are all these pilots in the market is another feature of capitalism but that's not the subject at hand now. But in conclusion: Not too few pilots---too many "jobs"...way too many.
