answer you shouldn't be in EMS...period....how about talk to your Lead pilot about that and what the other pilots do.....if you can get them to the receiving hospital within 14hrs of your duty time, YOU TAKE THE FLIGHT....If you get stuck, then you get stuck.....

So if you really are not a troll and you are looking for genuine answers AND you actually are new to EMS, then the very first thing I would say is drop this attitude right now. You will not last long in this field with an attitude like that towards your med crew.

If you can compete the transport with 10 hrs of uninterrupted rest in the previous 24, you take it. Most of our flights were 20 minute legs, so I've lifted many, many times as my relief was parking.

Unless your company has other rules. Then, it's you and your relief's problem.

A real answer... in case you are not a troll.

It depends on your base and your program. I would check with your lead and see what is expected of you. At my program the Hospital has made it clear that we can turn it down if we can not complete the entire flight, to include the return leg in an appropreate amount of time. They feel the out of service time associated with timing out somewhere not at base is not good. Other programs I've worked for say if you can get the patient to the receiving in time, then take it. It really depends.

Going past your scheduled duty period is your option

I have been doing EMS for about 17 years. My advice is, don't do it. It's been fun, but in the end, I'd do something different.

HAA will never be able to compete with the airlines when it comes to pay. As for the schedule and time away from the family, I can't say since I haven't done that. But, anything aviation requires a lot of time away.
