Flying in an area with a lot of helicopter traffic inside class C airspace. One of the hospitals insist on inbound/outbound helicopters using 123.050 for landing and tokeoffs. The problem is you need to be up with approach and it would be nice to be able to listen for local helo traffic on 123.025

We've only got two radios so this is a problem. Why do hospitals have to use 123.05 when 123.025 would seem safer in congested airspace?

I know, it's crazy busy, and sometimes all 4 radios are blasting at the same time which maxes out my RA factor:

Approach Control on Comm 1

Air to Air on Comm 2

Med Com on FM-UHF

Cent Com on FM-VHF

give them an initial call up, get your pad then switch to whatever your little fragile heart desires. make a takeoff call and then switch to whatever your delicate heart desires. quit being a whiny bitch and figure thsi out already.

Many reasons that they would use 123..05.

do they have an aircraft based at the heliport?  do they have a dispatcher that needs to monitor t/o and l/d.  

do they have pilot controlled lighting.   Could be a close by hospital that has pilot controlled lighting on 123.025 and rather than turn on both while airborne they are assinged a different freq... 

Its easy make a call on 123.02....  wait a few seconds.. nobody responds back switch to 123.05.   ATC will give you a freq. change when you are clear of any traffic.   

It really is not hard.

active and other standby on box 2, flip/flop as required.  Use box 1 for ATC obviously.  The hospital has absolutely zero control over your command pilot obligations.  I suggest you convene an informal chat with them via your management.  Again, remember, they are NOT in charge of you, you do your job as required and if push come to shove start reporting to your company and NASA ASRS and the FAA.  Is what being a PIC is all about.  Fire away!!

I don't know why some hospitals use 123.05 instead of 123.025 but can only speculate That maybe the hospital that's insists on frequency 123.05 is the major trauma center in the area. With other hospitals in the general vicinity.

If the major trauma center is a busy hospital, it would Somewhat deconflict Traffic between the major trauma center and the outlying hospitals. And as mentioned, it's likely that helipad lights are controlled by the frequency.

I don't care what the hospital wants. I talk on 123.025 and the TFM or TDFM. And of course ATC. We've got eyeballs and ears. Use them.

that the hospital ground station doesn't have an FCC license for 123.050. Or 123.025, for that matter.

Those are air-to-air frequencies. You need to be talking to the hospital on their med frequencies or they need to get the proper radio station license for ground-to-air.

probably not true.

123.05 was/is heliport freq and 123.025 can be air to air or heliport or whatever FCC decide.  They can be assigned to airport Unicom - true dat!
