If he couldn't see what was about to happen he was destined to have this happen somewhere, sometime. He's lucky he crashed where he crashed. This type of crash can kill at lot of folks if it happened in the wrong spot. |

That was a fantastic book. Was out of print and couldn't be found for a long time (I gave mine away to an aspiring young instructor). Would read it again for fun as it covered such an interesting range of case studies. |

It doesn't pay to be the nice guy helicopter pilot who can do anything the tower asks. There was no reason for that downwind landing. You need to say "unable". |

We're taught from hour zero to land and takeoff into the wind. But after we get our ratings we begin to disregard such silliness. And mostly we get away with it. Until one day we don't. For that hapless Astar pilot, that day finally came. We can imagine the (short) carpet dance that he had to do with the CP, as they both watched the incriminating video. And now we wonder where he'll be working next. |

I made a poor decision to go work for RLC about 15 years ago. We had this pilot in our indoc class we quickly named DownWind Kevin.
He was clueless about everything... I wouldn't let my dog fly with that guy. Some pilots just never get it, have near zero situational awarness, aren't trainable and are incapable of problem solving and decision making on the fly.
