Don't rely on your GOM to make safety calls for you. I have the left side Med crew member open the door when I'm below 40kts. They keep their weight inside the helicopter but step out on the skid to help me clear any unseen obstacles. It's the safest thing to do. We train this at the base as well during any post-maintenance Flights. Piggy back those and you get enough reps in no prob. |

Most GOMs will have you fired if you did that.
Safer bet might be to do your approach crabbed where you can see along the edge of the dash or out your door if you can't see well.
Keep your medcrew buckled in. It's still your fault if you fly into something that that supposedly cleared you to fly into. |

... except they have a 35,000 lumen handheld spotlight to use to scan around to look for wires. My best medic uses a monkey strap, so sometimes he gets a little carried away, and ends up hanging below the skids until we land. No big deal, he's prior military. |

Do you do your recon before you land?
Do you alternate light on and light off to create contrast?
Do you come in fairly steep and slow at a slight crab if you need it?
10 years and never had an issue was always able to see obstacles using this method
Hanging someone out, especially with no potective strap keeping them in the helicopter is just plain risky and wreckless and your'e flying your aircraft in a way that is inconsistent with the rules you have agreed to uphold with your company.
If you don't like the rules you have two options:
1. Bring it up with your chain of command and express your concerns to try to get a resolution
2. Look at how you are doing your approaches - Maybe there's something you can change to improve your safety and comfort profile out side of deviation from the rules
3. Find another job
Those are really your only options ... otherwise if something were to happy, you personally can be sued and lose pretty much everything and hurt / kill someone along the way

It's a well trained and rehearsed event. Becomes a non event. When there's any heavy maintenance we test got it to bring it back to service. We use those flights to crew up and practice call outs etc. nice low pressure practice before the real thing. |
