Didn't happen. The H60 is so powerful, it can suck the entire Paific ocean into its intake and spit it out the exhaust and keep flying. This machine can lift the city of Chicago, never breaks, can carry in excess of 30 people, and has made several trips to the moon (the only helicopter capable of doing so). Ask any 65 guy; they have heard it over and over and over..... |

Article here: https://www.helis.com/database/modelorg/Coast-Guard-Jayhawk/ We took 20 when seats out in OIF a number of times in the early part of the invasion (4 rows of 5 sitting on assault packs). Could have carried a few more between the crewchief seats (our survival gear box was strapped down between them so someone could have sit on it) and the pilot seats if necessary (which it wasn't, but that space can easily fit 3-4 people). Coast guard pilots have serious ballz. Friend of mine who transferred there said their mins are 1/4 mile visibiilty (no ceiling restriction). |

Even a small rain shaft- microburst in the current vernacular, kicks out a lot of air around the rainshaft and that wind can be moving pretty quick, 20, 30 knots. Had one in the middle of 3 mile diameter Gulf of Mexico production field doing excatly that. Fly around it from one structure top another, didn't have to guess the wind on the pad being approached, just turn the nose to the rain shaft and land... The good news is that individual cells like that are relatively brief, 15-20 minutes before they rain out. The squall line that that cell is associated with is another thing entirely. Don't be ahead of the line... |
