Well. There are many good points both ways here. I would say embrace technolog, but not at the expense of the basics. You must know how to use a real map and the mag compass. If your company does not provide paper maps it would be wise to buy your own for the area you operate in the most. Once a year would be good as you would only use it as a reference.

I love Foreflight makes navigating new complex airspace a lot easier, can file Flight Plans etc etc, having said that I like to have Papercharts accessible even if i never use it,  nothing like taking off and a couple minutes into your flight the Ipad overheats. Papercharts won't run out of battery either, I kind of look at it as a basic part of my 7P's.

Why sure. I was flying with a relatively new pilot. Young guy. He could not tell ATC where he was without looking at his foreflight. Even though we were only about 10 miles from where we took off from. that pretty sad for the new generations of pilots.

I have forefight strapped to my leg and never use it. I use the 430 to figure out where I am. Would be screwed without that GPS. I'm sure I would figure it out but man would I be stressed out if I had to deal reckon again without proper planning. I would probably just call approach for vectors home. LOL
