Considering returning to flying as a float pilot. What companies allow for RV owners to use their RV and what per/diem or expense pay is available on top of salary for such positions.

Pro/Cons of such a position appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

you can stay wherever you want but they won't pay for rv sites or anything like that unless you can make a special arrangement. They don't want you driving a personal vehicle more than 100 miles on a commute. I don't know of anyone that does this. At AMC you can be assigned a base for months or even years. I don't see any advantage to staying in an rv.

As the previous poster said why would you. As a AMC relief for years, AMC paid for hotel rentals and reasonable per diems. You often find yourself at the same base for months too due illness, hiring etc. Forget the RV. I worked for it but AMC always took care of me. I enjoyed the relief gig.

Thanks for the responses so far. The reason I asked is we are thinking of selling the house and hitting the road fulltime. Just trying to get and idea what RV owner daily expense rate may be. Wifey would be with me and is excited to hit the road.

Why does AMC not let you use your POV?  It's got to be cheaper then flying an airline and then renting a car on the other end.  I would consider doing the regional relief thing but I'll be damned if I'm going to take an airline if I don't need to.

The rate for mileage reimbursement is set by the IRS allowance. Last I checked it was 54.5 cents/mile. It is cheaper for the company to pay for a rental car for longer disrance travel. AMC allows personal vehicle for 100 miles or less. Plane fare is cheat for long distance vice rental car , hotels and meals.

They company is liable for your accidents when driving for company business.  They'd rather pay for your cheap rental car repairs than repairs on your expensive personal vehicle or more expensive RV. They can't provide a car for every local business drive, though. That's why AMC has the mileage limit and tries to limit your rental upgrades.  They don't mind if you drive, just don't put the company at risk.

If you have a valid reason for exception to the policy, they can and do waive it.  RV isn't going to make the cut though.

AMC does limit rental ca upgrades because there are idiots out there. AMC IS LIABLE for damages you cause when renting a car. One jerk got an upgrade and put a goat in Bach seat of Escalade. AMC WAS LIABLE. One idiot got an upgrade to an 80000 car and wrecked it. AMC LIABLE. That's why they restrict upgrades.
