This character. I live in a hilly area, not quite mountainous. He constantly is on my case about flying at the same altitude the whole leg. Takes me an hour to get to the hospital. He says the balloon pump has to be adjusted for each change in altitude. i fly 1000 AGL most places. Getting real tired of his mouth. Might shut it for him. |

Reading this makes me thankful that I don't have med crew like that at my base. I feel for ya. That would be incredibly frustrating. Maybe you can remind him of the sterile cockpit policy and tell him his comments are a distraction to you. I've never had a crew member complain like that while using a balloon pump and changing altitudes. |

Just pick an altitude that clears all obstacles and maintain it. Work with the idiot the best you can. |

Why not realize they are your customer and your job is to meet their needs and just fly a constant altitude. |

Just have your crew chief or mechanic or what ever you call him go to an Aircraft salvage yard and get a cabin pressure altitude controller out of an old Lear or Citation, no plumbing, just the gage and have it installed into an empty hole in the panel. Everytime he whines just say sorry, I will adjust the pressure . Tweek the little round knob and everyone will be happy. |

It's rare I'll agree with the medcrew but on this one there is a truth in what he is requesting. The balloon pump once out of it's carrier only has a limited supply of helium. For every inch of pressure change from the pressure altitude the balloon pump was calibrated at (the patients room) it will recalibrate and that costs helium. There is only enough helium, assuming you started with everything full, for 6 changes. So 3 on the climb, 3 on the descent. The goal is to fly only high enough to be safe and legal. Once you get to appx 1000' above where you started it will recal, if you go to 2000' it will do it again, this will continue every 1 inch change in pressure. If you keep going up and down along the flight path, climb over a ridge, drop back down, then climb over a second ridge and down again you will cause extra calibrations and ensuing loss of helium. Just get to where you need to be and stay there. If you are flying in a larger aircraft that can accept the pump and its carrier than its not much of an issue. For those of you flying in the mountains I'd be curious how you are doing balloon pumps where you are climbing up over large ranges and coming back down again. |

The job is pretty easy when the medcrew is happy. Do whatever is reasonable. Upset em and there will be nothing you can do, theyll get ya run off fast! |

If the trigger were the arterial ine you would because it is zero referenced to atmospheric pressure, but if the pressure was flucuating you would switch to an ecg trigger. What trumps all that is all ballon pumps now have a built in fiberoptic trigger on the balloon catheter that doesnt depend on either and still have ecg as a back up trigger but you will never need it because they just doent fail. Medic knows just enough to be dangerous. |
