Msg ID: 2769444 So what is the deal with the NC Crash—?? +9/-3

The NC Crash a couple weeks back. There was a flurry of bulletins and then--nothing.

Now of course the NTSB report won't be out until 3 years or so from now and then it will be buried in the Congressional Record or something similar that's out of sight and by then people will have moved on so any lessons that could/should come out of it will be lost.

But, while it's still fresh -- the word is that the guy was tooling along too low and hit a hill. Is this in fact what happened? Not interested in paralysis by analysis, just one simple question-- did he hit a hill enroute or not?

Asking because if he did, this shows that despite all highfalutin' SMS / TAWS / RADALT etc. etc. etc. constantly being asked for by the blabbermouth NTSB, guys will still be corking off instead of paying attention to the basics, and hit things.

Discuss.

I think they call it resignation. A hazardous attitude: since there will be accidents anyway, why bother trying to do anything to prevent them.

TAWS in helicopters is more of a liability than an asset.

I say it's good to be warned of hitting something, for obvious reasons. you say no so let's hear why.

If you fly at altitudes that are below the obstacles, while climbing after takeoff, or descending for landing, the TAWS won't shut up. It's a nuisance, and if it distracts you just at the wrong time, you might not live to regret it.

Have you ever landed on a rooftop pad in downtown, with bigger buildings all around you? I am assuming not. Not only that, you could have a high antennna or structure a couple of miles off your course, and the TAWs, or HTAWS in this case could start blaring.

easily distracted. don't fly at altitudes below obstacles.

"I ran into the wire because the TAWS was distracting me." lol what a perfect hose response.

The HTAWS warning you of obstacles is a "distraction", which could divert old hoses attention to who knows what and then he could crash. If you can't fly a helicopter above obstacles or take off and land with out being so distracted you may crash because of it, you need to find something else to do. Your beligerent stupidity is to the point of being offensive.

I bet you don't even know what a HTAWS is. You probably shut it off, out of ignorance, or pull the circuit breaker, or don't even have one installed. Get some more experience and you might be able to overcome your tremendous shortcomings.

All those beeps and buzzers are an annoyance.  I just dis-regard them unless it has something to do with RPM.  Aviate, nav., communicate.

Perhaps tooling along with 3-axis George at the controls with TWAS volume off and while texting on FaceBook, thankfully he hit the tree tops instead of the hill top!

Yes, it is HIGHLY likely that he hit the trees on the top of the mountain which is 5256' right where it occurred. Last pinged altitude on flightradar24 was 5250'. He was cruising at 4800'. Right before the incident there was a rapid increase in altitude and A/S went from 126 down to 70 and then of course lower. Sounds like a cyclic climb doesn't it?

So, in my opinion it was CFIT. Only he hit trees not terrain, otherwise they would have been dead for sure.

Now for all you DA's that don't know the difference between terrain and vegetatio. what you are standing on is terrain (ground, terra-firma) and what grows out of it is vegetation. Green stuff, grass, plants and TREES!!!

So for those that tried to belittle my presupposition as to what happen, grow up. Because the pilot did in fact go through the trees which is the only reason they survived. Of course it could have been different by milliseconds.

If they had hit the terrain there is a no question they would had died.

So go shuck it.
