Far better to be down there wishing you were up there, than to be up there wishing you were down there.

But was "Declared Emergency" needed?

ATC will declare for you depending on what you describe.

safe than sorry.  One never knows what is going to happen to that T/R G-box -- still got oil, coming apart internally, vibration present, etc.

Sounds not wise but it definitely is when you consider if you get it wrong and people get hurt you'll be in court defending your decision.  Don't go there, better to have a sit in a field or wherever.

Brings to mind clothing and alternate arrangements as required.  Summer, winter, rain, snow, environmental factors and so on.

Think!

Are you permitted to pull the Detector and look for yourself?? I believe if you as a Pilot have been Trained and Authorized, you can inspect it. It would concern me more than an Engine Chip. Then you have the RFM. Land as soon as_______.  PIC to make that call. Personally, TR failures usually turn our real bad!!

maintaining Boston Med flt late 80's when you had to pull LTS-101 Eng chip det. Pilot's were trained & did it. One didn't re-install properly & landed in a football field in NH. I drove up there & a little 2380 makes a mess.

I don't see a pilot removing T/R cowling to check chip detector.

Why not declare an emergency? Its a "land as soon possible" item in the emergency/malfunction procedurres for the 407.

The report lists the helicopter as a Bel 47G2. Since when are they used for HAA?

Look again...the linked page shows all reports for the day...the top one is for a Bell 407, which is what the thread is discussing.
