So as I approach my ten year mark as a flight clinician, yes, that is correct, flight clinician-I have come to the conclusion that pilots feel as though they are gods gift to this green earth. While there are those that are good and some that are bad, those that think and proclaim that they are good-are probably bad.... The ones who haven't stacked their aircraft are just lucky at this point. I've looked over this board for years and the only thing that I can find as a common feature is that "Medcrew are morons" and they complain about this and that. "They think they know weather-I went to flight school and I am a pilot, they have no clue what they are talking about." If you claim to know weather, become a meteorologist. You may have a grasp on physics and theory of flight-If you claim to be an expert, become a physicist or aeronautics engineer. Bottom line, in the industry of HEMS, most are on the verge of getting to something better: Pilots-"Bro, I don't have to do tours or be a CFI anymore, hell yeah, going to HEMS." Medcrew-"Bro, I can sleep all day and beat my meat/labia and not have to do anything." Bottom line, WE are a both wrong. If we were smarter than we thought we were, we would be somewhere else. We have to stop pulling this US vs THEM mentality and have a legitimate discussion over it. Sure, some of the med crew I have worked with are morons..... Have a discussion-now is the time for you to have your king D*CK show. Some of the pilots I have worked with-are morons..... So the med crew says no.... Im sure the HBS programs have a lot to do with communication issues but if you have a routine med crew-talk to them-grow up and have a discussion...... Last time I saw someone die as a result of an aircraft going down-I didn't see any medcrew at the stick..... |

For me, the "irony" was that as a newer HAA pilot, I tried everything I could think of to open dialogue between our medical crew, me, and the rest of the pilots to no avail. I tried revamping the base safety program, teaching short classes on weather issues like fog formation, thunderstorms, what LTL is and isn't, some CRM concepts and discussions on how we might implement them. It took me about six months to get it through my thick, stupid skull that if our medcrew didn't want to fly that day, it didn't matter how much base education, training, open discussion or whatever I facilitated. If they would rather stay in the recliner and watch their soaps or a ballgame, it wouldn't matter if the weather was way above mins, forecasted to stay that way, and giving every positive trend and indication. They were determined not to fly, and it wasn't my job to convince them otherwise. Any further discussion wasn'tmy job and could be interpreted as me pressuring them to fly. And that's fine. I'm not bitter about it. It was actually a fairly decent job. But I am happy to be on to something better. I guess the point of my rambling, OP, is that there is a reason for the negative stereotype of medical crew that you see on this forum. And as you said,there are idiots on both sides, and most of the time, those idiots, whether pilot or medcrew, aren't interested in an honest discussion. |

The medical crew at my base is always reluctance to take flights and put in a lot of effort into manipulating the pilots. They only want pilots who will comply with their requests and be complicit with them in manipulating the company.
This conduct is causing significant delays and disruptions and contributing to a divisive and toxic work environment. |

That was my experience as well. The more toxic crew at the base where I worked would state their unwillingness to fly, however if the pilot declined or aborted the flight and listed the reason for the decline or abort as that medical crewmember declining under the 51% rule, it created resentment toward the pilot. Bottom line...I as a pilot was expected to come up with a reason and/or bend the truth in such a way as to justify declining the flight, often when weather was perfectly safe to fly in. I'm certainly not proud of bending to the pressure, but anyone here who's worked at a toxic base has likely experienced something similar. And don't get me wrong. It's not all med crew or bases. I used to do a ton of workovers and never saw this at other bases within the region. |

Med crew are always starting with sick folks most of the time-Why do you think they call it practice PIC? We own it on the back end-for days, months, years while Sit up front oblivious to what's really going on. Obviously more people "die" in the back based purely on statistics alone.... Why do medics think they know everything? When the truth is they are the lowest paid, mainly educated from podcasts, and are also members of the local search and rescue. They think because they talk to pilots or have ridden with a pilot through the years they know about flight.
Take your certificate and throw it in the trash. Go enroll at your community college and become a nurse you will be happier and might realize the problem isn't the pilot it's you. |

As I approach 30 years flying I continue to be amazed at how many people die from medical screw ups. In my personal observation 2-4 each year that I see first hand.
Clinicians and the rest just go along and astonishingly I see family often thank these buffoons for doing their best!
So... until pilots kill more than medical types I'll remain unimpressed by opinions from the scrubs gallery. |

I've been in the helicopter business since 1984 and I've never heard that terminology.

I am going to design a helicopter that has a galley, with benches and rowing appliances that are manned by the medcrew.
When patients are absent, the medcrew will be assigned crewmember positions there, and the output of their rowing efforts will be transmitted to a portion of the main transmission to assist in keeping the helicopter flying. No sprag clutch, so they have to keep rowing during autorotation.
