Saw Careflight flying around at night with a 900' overcast in a B407.  I would be fired immediatly by GMR if I had excepted that same patient flight.  C'mon HAA pilots, we must keep the standards when it comes to night minimums.

MTC went to new minimums about 8-9 years ago.

1000/3 day and 1500/5 at night.

Wnen I started flying EMS it was 500'/ and 1 half mile.  We killed some folks back then.

Let's be honest, was 800/2 much better?

Flew for 25 years in HAA. When flying, I learned that WX mins were going to be WX I stay away from and don't get myself in to. Not take off down to. When I first started I did a lot of T/O at mins, I spent a lot of nights in farmers fields. Learned to never trusted the Wx man.

True that!  I learned the hard way the closer program who turned down a flight when the Wx looked OK was dam sure more familiar with their area Wx patterns than I was.  Never made that mistake again!

Yes, even when they don't communicate it!

I was RTBing one night when the Wx was less than the best.  Still very safe to fly, but overcast and dark.  About 30 minutes from base I asked if the med crew was doing OK.  The medic had been flying for a while and said yeah, no worries.  The RN was pretty new and said, "it looks a little bit 'skosh' out there."  I agreed that it was dark and overcast, then explained that we were about 2500' AGL, I could see plenty of ground lights, close and in the distance, and we were following a well travel highway with plenty of traffic, also providing groun lights.  She never said a word in reply, or even grunted!

After safely landing at the base I asked if anyone had any post flight debrief issues.  The medic said, "nope."  The RN said, "yeah, I have one.  I wanted to land because the weather was too bad and you ignored me!"  ???  "I never heard you say you were uncomfortable and wanted to land."  Her reply was, "I said it looked 'skosh' and you ignored me!"  Excuse me, am (was) I married to your twin sister!?!?!?

Men may be from Mars and women may be from Venus, but this woman was from the looney bin!  I told her to report it up the chain and filed an offical report via channels.  The Program Director called and wanted my side of the story.  I explained what I saw and heard, and told them to talk with the medic.  That was the last I heard of it.

WX minimums are not launch minimums. Maybe for an IFR program but that is even questionable. The goal is to minimize out of hospital time for the patient. Don't risk getting stuck in a field or worse with a patient just because you want to say you launch at minimums and therefore your a sky god. You become an old pilot flying like that.

WX minimums can be launch minimums. We are at an airport and have a hospital 6 miles to the north that transfers a lot of patients to the trauma center 4 miles south. We fly 1000/3 all day when the weather can be like that all day. Not a problem for the crew who want to get the job done. No night is a different matter.

Agree. there will always be another flight. And going home at the end of the day is more important than risking lives and multi-million dollar aircraft.

Yes there are those rare instances when things can line up. I would fly those as well so long as there is no precip below the ceiling. Flying 70 miles at 1000'/3 miles would not be a smart idea.
