Does anyone else thing the FAA medical is absolutley pointless? Some AMEs are crazy in depth, some don't even look at you. Experienced pilots grounded for stupid reasons such as "benign mole removal" until they get "supporting paperwork", yet others are allowed to drink themselves to death every single night while on shift and then go to work next day. What a joke of a system. |

It's frustrating to be sure. I don't have the answer, but I think the root of the problem is you have a bureaucracy in which there is no penalty or repercussion for simply denying, deferring, or declining medical approval. If someone or a group of someone's in the medical branch disapproves your medical certificate, even if there's no significant risk associated with your health, no individual or process is going to hold them accountable. They can always fall back on the fact that it's their discretion... they were just making the most conservative "safe" (sarcasm) decision - when, in all likelihood, they often come to a decision that requires the least amount of effort or work on their part and/or be so overly risk-averse and conservative in order to cover their own @$$. Hang in there. |

there should be penalties for doctors if they fail you? are you serious. yeah the doctors need to be "held accountable". They HAVE THE PAPERWORK SHOWING THE REASON YOU DIDN'T PASS. |

I never said there should be penalties for doctors for simply failing you.The bureaucracy of the FAA does indeed foster a particularly, overly conservative and risk-averse culture that unnecessarily denies or complicated the approval process for many pilots and certificate holders. |

Yes. That IS me. Note I said "SIMPLY" declining or deferring a medical. If you will look further down on the post you reference, I allude to my opinion that MANY who sit on panels and boards within the medical branch have an overly conservative and risk-averse mentality and thus view flat-out denial of a medical application as the go-to position. And yes, I believe that there are also some there who do this out of laziness rather than giving every case the attention to detail it needs. And no... I'm not f"""ing kidding you that there is no quality control process or procedure that would censure a doctor or other professional in that position for simply denying a medical approval vice giving it a thorough review if such were the case. It says tons about the Medical Certification Branch that there is an entire industry out there (AMAS, WingmanMed etc.) dedicated to helping pilots and other aviation professionals navigate the ins and outs of a complicated FAA Medical Certificate. One shouldn't have to pay a consulting agency for representation to make the guys at Medical Certification do their job correctly. |

Find a doctor you like and stick with them. I have been two probably 8-10 different AME's due to moves, some dying etc. While some were much more thorough than others, NONE of them wanted to fail you. It's not a perfect world bro. Quit crying. It's a very simple exam. |

that don't even look at you and no, you don't get denied for having a mole removed but I can see why you're upset: you suffer from a chronic case of dipsh*titis |

This thread started out with such promise. Sadly, after a great OP, it spiraled. Or swirled. Take your pick. Any of you guys see Tiger play the tampon prank ? If some of you had to develop a sense of humor, you would overheat and expire.
So says the New IP Guy. See replies above for the rest of the spiel. And no, I didn't wrongly spell spiel. |
