But had the chance to make the move in the early in the 80's but couldn't handle the pay cut.  Stayed in helicopters and went international, good move.  Doing well without money problems but now I work harder than when I was employed----wife keeps me busy all the time.

Regional starting pay is exponentially higher than the 1980s...there is a pilot shortage in case you didn't know!

1 had previous fixed wing time, went to a regional a bit before it was en vogue. Commuted, put in his time, and is now an FO at a major.

The other did a rotor to fixed wing transition program, got all his ratings while working HAA, then quit and went to a regional. Before he could get off reserve his airline shut it's doors and he was out of a job, again. He decided he'd had enough flying and now does something else entirely and seems pretty happy with it.

Other than that I know of a few others that left to go fixed wing but wasn't that close to them so I can't say if it worked out or not. All I know is they never came back to my company, so, take that for what you will.

At a legacy now, WB first officer.

if you're thinking about it, there has literally never been a better time to switch.  Huge bonuses along with 90k starting pay at most regionals.  Move on to a legacy in 2 years or less.

it's not for everybody, but I enjoy this lifestyle

WB is wide body...like a Boeing 777 vs. NB narrow body like a 737 or A320 etc.

Left for a 135 charter. I work a lot harder and am gone more than when I was in HEMS. But when I'm home, I'm home. Not using one or two days of my off-time to simply rest and recover from a week of 02:30 transfers either. Making a little more than when I left HEMS as well. Expecting a call from a major within the year.

Left august 2020, haven't missed flying a helicopter yet or the late night bs flights for a sprained ankle! The terrible pay raises or the crap 401ks!

hems hasn't seen even a glimmer of the shortage they will see in 10 years. Military isn't pumping pilots to them as much, and civilians lean to fixed wing more and more due to return on investment.

So did three coworkers (though two had previous experience).

I enjoyed HEMS/HAA, but the pay and benefits just tipped the scale too far the other way

I would accept less money, but not as much of a difference as staying would require

Frok EMS I only know 1 who did the full jump a while back before Covid. Have 2 buddies getting refreshed in fixed wing so they can do it in 2024. I have 15-20 military buddies and at least 6-7 former students that have done it. It's certainly not just talk in the mil world. Yes, there was the early batch pre-Covid that tried and didn't make the cut but that's since changed. I started down the path but some family issues got in the way. After I weather this storm I plan to get back on the path of finishing my ratings to do the jump (and I'm 45).
