My boss wants me to fly an R44 to a private event to display it/try to get it leased. The LZ is owned by a rich guy associated with donations or whatever and it is on a small boat/ship. The boat itself is way offshore like 100nm.  They said they Don't want the platform scratched by the skids. They plan to lift the R44 and hose clamp 2x4 planks to the bottom of the skids. They said this way it won't scratch the platform surface.

It's just one landing but it seems odd. There's no ground resonance so that's good but still an odd landing. I need to build time So it's prob worth it. Had anyone done something like this? Tips?

Oddly enough, I'm doing something similar with a Citation Excel later this week. It took us awhile to figure out how to weld on the tailhook hook and piece together a sort of arrestment cable that tied off to the stern just right, but this event gonn' be bussn'.

I guess I'll bite... Using the hose clamps makes me think it's technically not a "Temporary" installation. Therefore you would need an IA to ensure that it met the requirements for airworthiness and have it signed off by them.

100nm offshore? They don't want to scratch the deck so I assume it's not a yacht with helipad. What exactly will you be landing on then? I wouldn't use 2x4's, ever. Get a set of full length snow pads. Or just a couple short pieces of rubber radiator hose the same diameter as the skids and slip over the tubes.

Go for it. I don't know how fast those things go but it should get you a couple of hours or more. I would reccomend a PFD for yourself though(Academy has them).

Rubber radiator hose. I like that better than 2x4's. More aerodynamic and I can gorilla tape it. Thank you sir.

You will be flying an illegal aircraft unless you do the paperwork and file a FAA 337 form and documents and also have an FAA sign off and inspection done for FAA approval.  But what can go wrong, R44 over a hundred miles of water.  Use stainless steel clamps they won't scratch quite as bad as galvanized and I'm sure they have been tested for vibration failure times when strapped on to an R44's skids because the skids are the critical node points for helicopters.  Personally I wouldnt even consider my fuel burn when I got there because the rich guy is going to want you to give everyone on the boat a helicopter ride.  Look on the bright side.  Its only a hundred miles home and going home you always have a good tailwind !  I know its hard to build flight time, just use your head so you can stay around to build it.

If you have lived in the real helicopter world for over 20 yrs and  have 5 digits flight hours, think about how many crazy requests you have had made to you.

The guy says he needs the time so let him do what he wants. If he were to get caught it would be a minor infraction.
