This doesn't necessarily only apply to HAA (although probably mostly), it also applies to a lot of sector's in the industry, but to make it easier I'll just word it more for HAA.
Are you the pilot that tells your med crew too much info? Maybe stuff that pertains to the PILOT's responsibilities and job description that a nurse or medic just don't, and shouldn't necessarily need to know about the PILOTS duties? If you haven't learned this yet, you will quickly, that in regards to "teaching" your med crews, less is more. And you will soon learn, that the more your crews may know about what you're suppose to be doing, or your regulations, minimums, requirements, GOMs, "aerodynamics", etc you name it - the more they will use that ammo, complain, file reports, and throw you under the bus.
This isn't intended at all so that reckless careless pilots (like most of us) can get away with more crap, it's because EVERY pilot at one point will make a mistake. A pilot can try to follow every minimum and regulation required of them (which is more and more and more every day) and still make innocent mistakes. A simple example is most GOMs now have mandatory min altitudes for their pilots. If a pilot crosses a ridge at 100 ft less than min, and a crewmember knows it and is chomping at the bit to throw his "buddy" under the bus for 1 of a million reasons some crewmembers have. Most companies have anonymous reporting systems now too which makes it even easier for crew to complain vs coming to you like a man (or woman.. don't worry).
So my pilot people... LESS IS MORE! Don't screw you and your coworker pilots over! I'm amazed at how often I see it. The more info (not required) you give them, the more ammo. Some things are needed to be known, everything else is not! How much does your nurse or medic (or any crewmember) "teach" you about THEIR regluations and minimums etc? I promise, they will still think you're smart and a great pilot even if you don't throw up all your aviation knowledge on them. Any of y'all had experience with this? I've seen it too many times. What have y'all seen??
(we'll see how many nurses and medics are on this pilot forum by how many thumbs down it gets ) |

As a base mech I've seen many pilots endure undo grief by devulging unnecessary information. Smart ones just keep their mouth shut and fly the aircraft. |

Are you guys just massive asshats to your medcrews all the time or something? The oil monkeys I fly offshore don't complain and they're new faces half the time, let alone the guys I actually am friendly with on a day-to-day basis. Have you considered that maybe it's not the crew that's the problem? |

OP, I think you posted this mostly because you're bored, but yeah... you actually help drive home a really good point. I think many pilots out there who deal with toxic medcrew (and no... most medcrew aren't the toxic people we make that community out to be...but all it takes is one to bring down and totally kill base morale and camaraderie) think they're going to fix said toxic medcrew by educating them. And yeah... as you note, this only results in a medcrew member who knows just enough to be dangerous and throw their coworkers under the bus. Anyways, come to the dark side and fly jets. Yeah you won't be home quite as much. And yeah, you're gonna work your @$$ off, at least at first. But when you are home, you're home. You're not picking up the phone when your boss calls and needs you to cover a shift. You're not spending a day of your "day off" recovering from a week of flying from BFE to BFE at 02:30. And you're not dealing with medcrew who know more about flying than their pilots. Embrace the Dark Side, (prior) fellow HEMS pilots. It is your DESTINY. If I can do it, any idiot can. |

to comment I think you are right. Any business that allows chrapppp to occur as in HAA will always lose personnel when the other side of the fence is significantly more stable, and lucrative. People leave bad people, not necessarily what they love and enjoy. People make the difference in both directions.
Med people come from all backgrounds. If in their education they were enlightened how to get along with everyone rather than how to avoid getting in to trouble, which teaches how to get others in to trouble, there might be a solution to the problem. Another reality is HAA med crews tend to think they are the customer. Not true. If they were, they would pay the bills - they don't, not even remotely close. The patient is responsible for generating payment for services, alone or through insurance.
No clue how HAA med crews become such difficult people to get along with, and it may be the conflict for control with pilots, but, each has their wheel house. Best to stick to it. |

Sadly true. And sad we have to cater to the 1% or 2% to all 100% of crews because most a solid good people with no ill intentions. Crazy how some crews over involve themselves with the pilot's responsibilities when the pilot's don't seem to involve themselves in their crews responsibilities and holding them accountable for their policies in their field. |
