I sometimes like to challenge myself and poke into small clouds around 2-3k feet. Last week I was in one for like 3 minutes! It was a little scary but i feel like I learned so much. I'm up to 3 hours IFR time. I figure, how else are we supposed to get it? I'm trying to build the tile slowly for the day I get my ATP. Any of you guys do/did this?

you don't have to have any time in the clouds for an ATP and you also would not be able to log the time and the ride is all approaches but otherwise good plan mr. troll! |

I wasn't doing approaches. It was just enroute VFR to a little IFR. What's wrong with expanding my skills? |

your skills! you weren't doing approaches but you should be since the ATP is pretty much all approaches and auto pilot so you are wasting your time as well as being dangerous but good plan! |

All the time, dude. I know, I know; there might be other traffic in those clouds, but I subscribe to the Big Sky Little Airplane theory. Really... What could possibly go wrong? |

Did you get a IFR clearance in an Aircraft set up for Single pilot or did you have a second pilot with you?
Nothing wrong with going IMC with the right Aircraft and currency if you have pax |

Personally, I don't log in IMC because it's hard to see the load |

Your kidding yourself if you believe that poking around inside a cloud that you can easily exit is the equivalent of IMC flight. I will grant that most of my IFR flights are in conditions that are about as much out of the clouds as in the clouds. Despite that fact, the feeling of being in IMC conditions that require an approach to exit the conditions is a totally different animal. The confidence and knowledge to conduct true IMC operations comes through serious practice and training. You are, at most, preparing yourself for brief encounters with reduced visibility and there is value to that, despite the fact you are operating in violation of regulations and perhaps putting others in danger. |

No clearance and no second pilot. Unless you count my commercial student as a safety pilot. |
