The military guy gets put in command of a multi million dollar turbine aircraft with a couple 300 hours of flight time, and has absolutely no idea what he's doing, in order to keep him from killing himself on the first flight he is surrounded by a labyrinth of regulations, procedures, and supervisors. He thinks this is the greatest thing ever, the civilian guy who's never been in the military has to learn everything on his own sweat out 1000 or 1500 flat hours before he gets to sweep the hanger and faces the end of his career if he screws up. Neither side knows what the other is talking about, and can only learn it through experience. This is why both of them think they are God's gift to Aviation, and neither one of them is right .

scenarios remotely describe what an army or civilian pilot experience. surrounded by supervisors? lol. any dummy can fly any helicopter at 300 hours and I know plenty of instructors that crashed early on and never missed a beat. nobody is sweeping no hangar at 1500 hours. they are going from platform to platform or schlepping tourists. it's so weird when non pilots pretend to be pilots just from what they read on here.

Damn straight we civs started out sweeping floors. At 800 hours I was a hook man on Christmas trees. I was lucky to log a .2 at the end of the day taking the machine back. Still occurs today. Low timers fuel, wash, and do leak check run ups for the mechanics. Maybe ferry a machine if it's a no fuel stop.

urban myth. It would take you decades of hanging around at some small operator, doing odd jobs, to get any amount of flight time. The last person you want running up a turbine is the aircraft washer. Every civilian pilot I know was an instructor or got lucky flying tours in a Robinson, where you flew 2-6 hours a day. Seriously, what kind of a moron is going to spend all day hooking up Christmas trees for a .2?

Whatevs. Prior mil guy here. Some of the best pilots I've ever worked with were fellow prior mil guys. Some of the worst pilots I've ever worked with were fellow prior mil guys. Some of the best pilots I've ever worked with were civilian-trained. Some of the worst pilots I've ever worked with were civilian-trained. Your origin story has alot less to do with your successful career as a pilot than your work ethic and trainability.
