I flew Pumas IFR stateside and international in the late 70's and early 80's. It was not a new airframe when I flew them. It's amazing they have been able to upgrade and renew the Puma. Solid aircraft. |

To think: the Puma first flew in 1965 (Vietnam era). So we had the technology back in those days for Blackhawk/Apache level capability (speed, load, maneuverability) and went with the UH-1/AH-1 instead (when we also had the Sikorsky Blackhawk attack helicopter and the Cheyenne also available).
Also, the Gazelle came out in 1968 and the Lama in 70. Both are pretty impressive workhorses that would put multiple US designed OH type helicopters to shame for many years.
Can't stand the French but gotta admit those 3 helicopter types are pretty amazing helicopters given the era that they debuted. |
