Never work or fly sick. Unless there's a way to get paid for it,find a way to use every bit of sick days you have. Can't believe there are employers that require notes from your provider. I used to work in HEMS, and I can't remember any policy that required such a note. Wow. That's stupid. |

Pilots have a duty to refuse to fly if they have any doubt as to their being able to safely complete it because of a health issue of any sort. Requiring a note attesting to your illness discourages pilots from best safety practice.
If and when an incident, accident happens and the pilot was sick and 'discouraged' from sick days in any way, lawsuits will fly- and be successful. |

P.S. An operator that discourages sick days is the sort of operator that will encourage you top fly with mechanical issues (write'm up when you get to the base or when the weather is down) and/or "push" weather. |

AMC discourages you taking sick days. If you take over three just for a common cold you have to go on short-term disability. So you got people taking two then coming to work sick just because they don't want to be forced into short term disability for a cold. It's an awful policy |

To go on short term disability, you have to be out for a minimum of two weeks, which for most EMS pilots is one week of work (plus your week off). In that case, you have to take seven sick days, or if you don't have the sick time accrued, vacation days. To address the OP's issue, at AMC we can accrue up to 10 sick days before it no longer accrues. I take three so I can always have seven left to have the required sick time to go on short term disability without using my vacation. If you stay at 10 sick days, you are kind of screwing someone else out of some OT as well as time off for yourself. Enjoy and do what is best for you. |

If you take more than 3 sick days short term kicks in automatically. Happened to me. |

past your initial filing for it. That's why the company has you do it, they are helping you to collect it as soon as possible if your sick time extends out. You don't actually go on STD after 3 days!
Bet that happened to you too! |

They do discourage you from calling out sick. If you go over 3 days you have to have a doctor's note to come back and are put on short term. Now I have to pay for a doctor's visit just to get a note. And if my deductible isn't met yet then I could be paying 100 plus dollars just for a note. I would say that is a pretty big deterrent from calling out sick when you probably should. |

If you go on short term you can't collect ACCRA pay. The only way to make up for it is to cash out more that 12hrs a day from your vacation bank. Short term sucks and I will avoid it at all costs. |

that quickly because if you don't and are LEGITIMATELY sick, waiting until the 10th day to file a claim will cause you to MISS a week of STD payments. They are having you start the claim process to EXPIDITE you being covered by STD! Otherwise, there will be a gap in your income.
Remember STD is an insurance backup, not a company payroll plan to pay you for not working! They are actually helping you despite the fact you are too naieve to understand it!
Nothing discourages you from taking sick time, except your twisted perception of it! |

I got the doctor note e-mail ONCE. I sent back an e-mail attaching my appoint confirmation in 3 weeks then didn’t answer my phone. Just texted back ‘waiting on doctor appointment’
Of course the machine sat for lack of coverage. Boss sent another e-mail 12 days in saying doctor note requirement was cancelled if I was well please return to work. |

PHI did away with sick time and made it Emergency Medical Leave. (EML) I forget the yearly accrual, but it maxes out at 560 hours (7 weeks @ 80hrs a week)
Downsides: You can't use it until you've been with the company for 4 years, and have already taken 40 hours of PTO for the issue.
I.e. If you get the flu you need to take 40 hours of PTO first, then you can start using your EML time.
But you know, dont come to work sick! Stay home, protect your fellow employees and burn all your limited vacation time! |
