I haven't looked at the winds yet but I bet LTE with that stupid fenstron. It's great on a 135 but sucks on the 130.

You must not have many hours in a 130. Never had an issue with LTE in the 3000hrs I flew one. None of the pilot's I flew with had any issues either. Fenestrom is very effective.

You must not be being forced to land it with a 25kt tail wind. Astar would do fine. All the pilots would refuse to fly it over 25kts. And no, I don't have 3000 hrs in it. Thank god. I have never had an issue with a 135. You can't change my mind. The 130 sucks

Why would you land with a 25 knot tailwind in any helicopter?

Over 2,000 hours in the EC130. its fenestron is fine and has plenty of authority. Anyone that says otherwise isn't experienced in it. I've taken 45+ crosswind and tailwinds without issue.

I didn't believe you until you said it could handle 45 knots no problem.

Flew the 130 for a couple years and accumulated around 900 hours in it.

I try to land into the wind whenever possible. I have hovered IGE and retained controllability with the EC 130 in up to 35kt crosswinds at up to 5000' DA. The fenestron has a bit of lag to its effectiveness, but it will catch up as long as you don't over control.

If you take it slow you can do 360 pedal turns in 30kt winds with precision, above 30kts just keep the damn nose into the wind.

since when do we consider a helicopter that routinely reaches the stops when hovering considered to have plenty of tr authority because that's what it does. I have flown many helicopters that do not do this

when I come in to land, I have to reposition my right foot forward for when I have to go almost full or full travel with the pedal. That is definitely a first.

Yup, all true statements above.  YES, the 130 can maintain control in all headings and wind velocities (in terms of ability).  But also, YES, it sucks at doing it effectively. I flew it for a year and hated it.

It's SLOW to react to pedal movements and takes twice the amount of input compared to anything else (I've flown the 206 series, 407, 530, and EC145).  What takes 1/2" of pedal movement takes a MINIMUM of 1-2" (or more) and there's a distinct 0.5 to 2 second lag before it bites.  There is zero instant tail rotor authority like in a 407 or 530.

Couple that with the most wobbly cyclic known to man (squirrely-est helicopter I ever flew) and you have a very frustrating helicopter to fly.  Looks sexy but it's not a pilot's helicopter.  Especially having the only pilot seat option on the left side.

Aerospatial/Eurocopter/Airbus makes stupid decisions in design.  Only thing I liked about it was the visibility and the 30 second cool-down.

I have been flying 130s for 15 years and prior to that AS365 and Astars for another 10. Most will know that the Window on a Fen is slow to react just due to its design which is not the reaction you get in the Astar. The other thing that hurts you is the size of the Vert in slow flight but it's a nice addition in cruise.

so it's really not the helicopters fault the tail "is slow to react" and "not the reaction" you get in an astar. it's due to its "design"lol also why is it bad in slow flight and good in cruise?

I see lots of blabbing about tail rotor pros and cons how about some info on what actually happened? In the wide open area of the photo I doubt a tail rotor problem is to blame.

Let me clarify , LTE occurring from poor wind positioning where there is plenty of room to maneuver in any direction is a non event. The photo shows an off airport landing which isn’t typical for Vegas tours.
I would hope that even the lowest time tour pilot could manage even a full tail drive failure to a run on landing.

Since the tour world is small I’ll believe that probable cause is already floating the rumor river and it’s not the mysterious LTE phantom.
