I was a good people person so the generous tax free tips helped push my annual income above my HEMS salary.

No, hour per hour, HAA pays more than tours.

No one makes you fly a single.  You choose to accept a job where night single flying is part of it.

Show me where the pilot's bed is during your duty day at Papillion, Maverick, or Blue, etc...

EMS = Earn Money Sleeping

(and Medcrew LOVE to sleep, watch Tiktok all day, and/or do work/prep for their other side-gigs)... once you do one flight for one of their shifts then "they're done" attitutude-wise.

Out of those who've been doing it for at least 5-10 years, only maybe 30-40% are actually mission minded and care about doing their job throughout the whole shift.

So you get paid to be ready and paid to sleep... ESPECIALLY if it's an overcast day (no matter how hight the ceilings are)

Night Single pilot 3 am sucks. Tour pilots make more than EMS in some locations without unhealthy night work.

Serious question: Can you really make enough money flying tours in Las Vegas or Hawaii to support a family? I flew tours in Alaska in the 90's to build time, but never considered that elsewhere a person might make an actual career of it. How much can one make in Hawaii?

I made well over 100k after tips at Mav with almost no overtime, but that was quite a long time ago. Dunno if it's better or worse these days.

And they make you fly at night in singles?!

"They" don't/didn't make me do anything. Ever. I flew 'singles' at night from the get gone, part of the job. What platform did you get your wings in?

Now, here's a proposition and an argument:

First, the proposition- twins, multis are more complicated thus more pilot-error prone. Look at some stats, you'll find flyable 'complex/multi' aircraft crashed more often by polot error than come to grief by mechanical/systems/controlled flight into the ground combined.

Second- I've heard multiple new twin pilots flying stupid because 'the aircrarft has two engines' and can fly away. You ain't been flying very long before you learn that that second engine just enables a more graceful crash. Or, that second engine is toasted/oversped getting you outta wherever.

Me? I preferred night flights. Less aircraft around, cooler, denser, smoother air and I could see much further without the sun light backscatter. This was all especially true with NVGs.

What I didn't like about HEMS was not enough flying until there was too much. Sit a week of nights and one call. Or you would get a call just as you completed you prep, then be relieved remotely.

I flew with BHH prior to AMC buying them. Averaged around $100K per year(including tips). However, I flew around 900-1000 hrs per year there. And the cost of living ate most of that up. Went to AMC in the mid-west flying single engine VFR. First year at $70,000 base with about $10K extra working on days off. Cost of living dirt cheap but it was OK. Flew 158 hours the first year.  This was all about 10 years ago. So, each has it's plus and minus.  And totally different flying.

Yes. You also don't have to stand the front line of viruses or other Contagious diseases. EMS pilot fly night, IFR, and NVG. Your body gets so old very quickly. Considering those things, the EMS pilot pay scale is underpaid.
