They might have made it if they had manned the bases they had. Instead, they closed bases and still didn't man the remaining bases. You can PR all you want, but if you don't have a crew when they call, you don't get the flight. 124 pilots and 99 clinician job ads right now. We know that float/relief/pool covers many of the vacancies, but we don't know how many vacancies are't even posted. |

Medcrew consistently refuse to fly in perfectly flyable weather.
Wx at my base and area is 3300-3500 and 10SM. But because there's one blue dot to the NW where weather is 1800 (and we're at sea level with zero mountains nearby) with forecast to remain stable all night and despite telling them we won't be taking any flights that way they still aren't "comfortable" to fly.
It's like this for every pilot at my base of mostly old-timers. It's just the way it is. Typical in this industry now.
Makes me question what's the point of this mission... I'll be happy when I'm retired and know that drones are doing this job. |

question the point of "the mission". their actions don't change why you're there. they may make the job difficult but that doesn't change what the job is. |

Document, document, document! WX onservations and forecasts, your experience in assessing the risk and the alternatives you have/had. This gives management ground to assess and instruct as appropriate. Of course, you should also go over these things with the crew.
I don't remember the quote source, but it was to the point that it's better to wrong and safe on the ground than wrong in flight.
Whatever happens, don't create the impression that you are 'controlling' their decisions. You build trust when everybody takes part in the decision. And the decision process is very different aviation/med crew. A point I think some pilots forget is that you won't have the responsibility for the patient care when things go South on the transport leg... |

CFN told med crews to stop looking at radar pictures and go fly if the pilot says it is ok. If once airborne the weather is obviously not flyable then return, divert, or land. She said if a med crew refuses the flight that goes on the report. She was very safety aware but also recognized BS when it arose. Since people respected her it worked, somewhat.
