Have a friend wanting to get his private helicopter and maybe commercial.  He is having a hard time finding a school in Oklahoma, any suggestions?

Thanks,

Old and out of touch

Where in Oklahoma? I generally encourage folks to get their private in airplanes, then get their helicopter rating as an add-on. Depending on where he is in OK, I might be able to help.

That is some of the worst advice. After they waste their money on the airplane they will still have to pay for 40-60hrs of helicopter time just to get proficient enough for their private. If you really want to fly helicopters don't do planes first. Do an airplane add on later if you want.

You are incorrect. If one has a private pilot certificate in airplanes, he or she only has to have 27 hours of instruction in a helicopter for the add-on. When you look at rental rates for helicopters compares to rates for small airplanes, you can see that the price for doing airplane first with a helicopter add-on is very close to doing the entire ppl syllabus in a helicopter, AND you get both ratings.

He is absolutely correct. Despite what the regulatory minimums are, it is still going to take the average person 40-60 hours of helicopter time to become proficient enough to pass a private pilot check ride. If he is going to get a commercial rating and start looking for work, he can save some time and money there, but unless he has an industry "in," he will be competing with applicants that have more helicopter time than he does.

Yes but no one is getting there helicopter add on in 27hrs. It is still going to take them 40+ hrs to become proficient enough for a check ride. So now they have wasted there money on the airplane private rating thinking it would cut costs for the helicopter rating. I feel sorry for anyone that believes they are saving money by doing airplane first.

Fine guys, but I respectfully disagree. Getting your add-on in 27 hours is absolutely do-able. If it takes someone 40-60 hours to do their add-on, then they need to find a new instructor. If you disagree, that's fine. The guys I instructed for their add-on were safe and ready for their check at about hour 20-22. The remaining few hours were generally checkride prep and just meeting the requirement. Your mileage may vary. I'm simply sharing MY experience.

As a DPE I have conducted hundreds of Private Pilot practical tests. I can't think of an applicant with less than 40 hours ever taking the Private Pilot practical test. The average is around 50 hours.

you will be close to 40 doing an add on. I did lots of them as an instructor and most were in that range. Nobody is going to do it in less than 35. Its pretty much starting from scratch for most people.

You only need 19 hours for add on.  Read and add, then ask a helicopter DPE if you doubt.  Of course you had better be a true wonder
