Anyone on here ever use short or long term disability? Curious on how it works and if any good. Most companies offer it but I've never heard anyone using it. If you lose your medical, does it pay the bills?

Never used it but I never paid for the long term disability insurance.  I you have any kind of government pension most policies deduct that pension amount from your salary to determine how much you get.  Not worth the money.

We had a Pilot at our Base use it when his A1C was too high and he couldn't get his medical , he was off for about 2 months and got about 60% of his regular pay. But he had to use all of his PTO and vacation time before it would kick in , which meant he only got 2 paychecks with use of short term , better than nothing I guess.

If you participate in high risk sports, are prone to accidents, have bad health,,, getting long in the teeth or have poor asset to debt ratio...

then get a lot of insurance.

Last year I had shoulder surgery. 5 weeks with a sling 5 more of physical therapy before I coauthor fly again. I applied ahead and got my first check 9 days after surgery. In my case I got 70% from insurance and my company made up the amount to base pay. Now then utility guys make about 25% of the year income from flight hours so I didn’t make that pay.
Also my AME spent about a minute asking for a range of motion display and passed me without any grief.

Out 10 weeks.  CIG NA stalled and stalled.  Supposed to get $700/week.  Got one check at week 3 , one at week six after threatening to call state insurance board.  At week ten you switch to long term.  Only at this point did they have any sense of urgency, paid me a lump sum, AFTER I was back to work.  They don't take tax deductions out, and it counts as income.

Insurance claims people rank with child molesters on the lowest form of life scale.

I should be thankful for the benefit I didn't get when I theoretically would have needed it (not working).  My apologies for not knowing the tax implications of STD while in the hospital.  eat a dk.

You should be so grateful to receive something that the company and insurance company is contractually obligated to provide.

Just be careful you're getting loss of license (i.e. your medical) insurance and not just regular short or long term insurance. Plenty of scenarios where your medical will get held up but according to the insurance company you're still capable of work and aren't "disabled."

fwiw I'd rather save my pennies and self insure. If you're not in that position yet it might be worth it.

Short term for us starts 14 days after the "claim" is made.  Most people will use their sick/vacaction/PTO time to fill in that gap.

The 60% is reportedly not taxed but if you have premiums that are paid out of your paycheck normally you will have to cover those out of pocket to keep your coverages.

Though it does sometimes happen and require clarification, your claim should continue until you get your medical back.

Use up you vacation and sick leave first, then short term kicks in.  Long term after that if you've paid premiums.  If not, you get nada.  If you're living pay check to pay check, pay for the long term premium.
