Attempt, yes. Start cycle? Should be defined in RFM what a start cycle is. In other aircraft a start cycle is start to shutdown.

If you didn't throttle up at 12%, then NO. But if you aborted after you poured Jet A into the turbine then YES.

Every time I put a load on that starter gen, I counted it as a start (for maintenance reasons ).

you vent the engine you count that as a start cycle.  ummm. congrats on wasting a lot of money for no reason.

When you do a comp wash you pull Igniter CB & motor= NO Start Cycle. The fter 3 wshes motor to blow out rinse water,  then start to dry it.

You shouldn't be "venting" RR/Allison engines. (Yes, we have all done it after shutdown.) There was a letter from Allison years ago discouraging this procedure because of the shock to the turbine wheels and nozzles with ambient air drawn in. Ask your mechanic to find it and show it to you.

This letter applied to venting right after shutdown, not after it has been sitting for awhile.

Respectfully, you should probably consult your company's policy or call a Bell Service Center to determine specific events that trigger a cycle or a RIN. As you can see above, if you ask five different people in this forum, you'll get six different answers. Good luck. Please post what you find out.

Life Limited Parts
Chapter 05-10-00 contains FAA approved life limitations for those engine parts that are life limited.
Life limits of parts are based on total hours or total cycles, which ever occurs first.


Operating hours with respect to maintenance records means the time from the moment an aircraft leaves the surface of the earth until it touches at the next point of landing.


A cycle is defined as a start or start attempt. The operator is assisted in maintaining a cycle count by means of an engine furnished counter which will record the number of times the ignition exciter is energized. (It is considered that the number of times the ignition exciter is energized and lightoff does not occur is negligible.)

I’ve flown probably 60 different helicopters with C-20, C-30 engines in my life. I’ve seen one that had an engine counter installed and it was ignored by the owner as inaccurate. That said, I’ve also never heard of an engine component that timed out fron start cycles before flight hours

one type of cycle. No separate start cycles. It just happens RR uses starts to count their cycles. Other OEMs use different methods with some not counting any maintenance starts/runs. But have seen a few turbine wheels retired by cycles before making the hour limit. So definitely possibly to cycle out some parts on the 250 series.

there is a light-off.  Otherwise you are just motoring the engine.
