Is this platform good for anything? It's a failed border patrol purchase, and then after that, it seems to have just imploded? Does anyone have any real time in this machine working it hard?

I've seen one working everyday doing power line work including HEC.

Former CBP pilot here, those things were death traps. Autorotate like a Coke machine dropped from a C-130... After years of pilot complaints, we had an MD test pilot fly with our SME to prove auto capabilities, the test pilot crashed doing a 180 auto... We subsequently got rid of all the aircraft.

Isn't NOT correct. And quit spreading false info. That helicopter crashed because CBP mechanics were terrible and yalls decision making was pathetic. Your mechanics cranked more pitch into the blades cause your inexperienced pilots were complaining about running out of collective cause your machines were too heavy. So when they did the auto, the rpm decayed and there was no pitch left When the blades stalled.

I’ve got a few 1000 hours power line in them. Including wire pulling. They lift well until higher DA’s, fast, plenty of room in the back for cargo stuff but not really a passenger machine.
MD doesn’t support them much so when small but important items go wrong it’s a pain to find parts.
The engine is a basic C-47 but with a different gearbox and FADAC/MCU so it’s not B-407 direct change. I personally like the NOTAR but some don’t. The CWA from right quartering is larger than typical MD 500/530’s but the winds really got to be blasting.
Lastly, the CBP really wanted A-stars back then and did everything they could to ‘prove’ the 600 unworthy, the myth that the machine will nose tuck and spin/roll is 100% MYTH!!!
I have flown the very machine seen in the famous 180 hard landing after repair. Watch the video, the auto was in trouble before even turning and never got better. The RPM is running away, the sink rate was way too high and way too steep.
