Much debate continues on the benefits of leaving helicopters for greener pastures.
A recent post made me realize timing is everything. 20 years ago, jumping to airplanes was suicide. About half succeeded, as it was a real boys club. A number of peers simply stopped flying rather than come crawling back to offshore or EMS.
Fast forward 20 years, now the debate has merit. If successful, you can double or triple your lifetime income by taking a chance. I'm telling everyone, ie the younger guys, go now while the demand is high. This wint last.
There are a few exceptions. A number of pilots make north of 200k, by making good choices. Corp, VIP, Yachties, etc.
My take is still this. If your hobbies are more important than income, do what it takes to pay the bills. Just know you will be still flying into your late 60s. If building a larger income is more important to secure a pain free retirement, the answer is quite clear.

You can ALWAYS go back to helicopters, even during a furlough, and probably for more money than you were getting when you left, |

I'm confident that it's not the only thing that has.
never before was an airline career attainable without a college degree, without previous multi-engine time, without an uncle in the business. none of that is necessary right now.
but yeah, that was a sweet burn you made, right? |

This is Just Helicopters, not rtag or just want to be airline pilots. At this point we're all aware long term there is more money in fixed wing if you can make the jump young enough. Some of us are past that point or just have no desire to fly fixed wing. Do we really need a daily post about it? If it's the greatest thing you could ever do, why do you guys have to beg more of us to come over all the time? |

When people leave rotary-wing work for a better job, in this case fixed-wing work, they improve their lives. However unintentionally, they also improve the lives of the people left behind.
People are not paid by the value that they bring to the company. They are paid by how easily they are replaced. An exodus from the industry for greener pastures thins ready replacements. |

That's fine, if furloughed you can always run to HAA to grab a quick check . Then when you get called back from furlough, throw HAA away like the trash it is with it's trash pay ! |
