What are your recommendations for cold weather flight gear?

Columbia Jackets?

Military Surplus?

Carhartt?

Do you put on more layers under your flight suit?

I would recommend an overwater immersion suit.

you need to be prepared for getting stuck in the middle of nowhere broken down in a field.  You need to be completely prepared.  Not a joke.  BTDT and was glad I grew up in a bitterly cold climate.

In the winter, I carried 2 sleeping bags, -20 degrees.  A 15 lb survival kit and a firearm. ( that was for fighting over the sleeping bags).  All pax had to have a good coat, hat and gloves.  I didn't always file a flight plan but at least 2 people would know where were going to be. ( Corporate type, utility work).

"Winter" is relative... Are we talking Dauphin Canada winter?  Deadhorse winter?  MN winter?  Anchorage winter?

Most Columbia gear sucks.  I do layers.  Merino wool against the skin, cashmere or wool over that, fleece and warm jacket.

If I am flying in very remote/cold place where I may be stuck for a few days, I have a "Wiggy's" setup (pants, jacket, lamilight socks) that I can put over my inner layers and make it overnight.  I also keep bunny boots and chemical heaters in my kit.  I fit it all in a small compresion duffel.

Not sure where you are or what your climate is. When I was an HAA pilot in N Central Texas, I wore nomex/aramid undergarments under my flight suits when it got cold cold. Just cheap, cotton pajama pants under it when it was just cold (with company issued flight jacket).
