Anyone have experiences working HEMS located at a fire station?  Seems like nurses marking their territory might clash with the fire bros and leave the pilot stuck in the middle.  They are working through the politics but that might be where our base ends up (with a jail right across the street!). Just want to prepare

and firefighters are somewhat required to take chances in order to accomplish their jobs.  Pilots do NOT get paid to take chances, they get paid to say NO when approriate to their skill set which is intrinsic to the individual pilot who has the final choice to go, or not.

The former two jobs do not mix well with the latter though mistakes by any could lead to a mishap, accident, injury or death.

Without regulations, and standards in operating aviation my sense is it would be far more fatal than fire fighting and emergency medicine combined.

Pilots need to control their adrenalin, maybe not so much the other two.

Been there, got the T-shirt.  That mix is not good.

The females in your group will absolutely love it.

The straight males will not.

Distractions continually.

Not worth the savings.

none of those jobs require you to take chances. there is risk involved, though. guess which one has the highest fatality rate? aircraft pilots. you don't have to take chances to get killed at work.

Have done it and would rather not.

There's Questions / Drama about everything.

Are you pitching in for the firehouse meal?  If you make your own food, did you make enough for everybody?  You end up cooking at odd hours.  Did you do your share of the cleaning or do a good enough job?  Did you pitch in for the condiment fund this month?  Why are you sitting on your butt watching Netflix?  Firemen work around the station until 5pm.  It's endless.

and regardless whatever relationship your program has with the department, the firemen still resent you being there.  You're not trusted.

individual results may vary

The problem I see is being able to get rest during your stint.  The firetrucks launching more times through the period than the helicopter.  The radio blasting calls for other response locations along with updates on calls.  Otherwise, I see some possible advantages.  Bigger facility, more amenities, higher comfort level, personnel to interact with dureing down time, community involvement,...

I worked Clarksdale about 4 years ago. Based out of a ambulance dispatch center, sort of like a firehouse with ambulances. Constant dispatch alarms, sirens, etc. throughout the night. Not a fun time. Glad AMC left that contract.

Agree.  The noise of the constant alarms even if not for their station would drive you crazy.  The benefits definately do not out weigh the benefits.

LifeNet in AZ had a base located at a Tucson Northwest Fire station for a while.  I don't remember too much drama, but I only did occasional workovers there.  There was one day though that a Fire Captian came into the quarters and saw me in shorts and "comfy shoes."  He told me to put my flight suit on and I asked him if we had a flight.  He said "no" but that I needed to be ready incase we got one,  When I said it would take like 10 seconds to put my flight suit and (zip up) boots on if we got a call he got p 1 s s y and "demanded" I put them on.  BTW, he wasn't in all his FF gear, but I digress.  I told him I was a bit confused and asked him if I worked for him.  He stormed off in a huff.  10 or 15 minutes later I get a call from the head shed asking me what happened.  I explained my side of the story.  The Program Director asked me to be sure to be in full "uniform" if I went into the fire house.  "No problem."  I NEVER went into their quarters!

I reckon its possible to have both good and nice pilots. you know, the pilots that are secure enough in their ability to not hide behind the "I'm the big important PIC" thing. I don't wonder what category you fall into.
